i say coca cola but have never gotten any odd looks from it.

Takes people a moment to parse accents if they are out of practice with dealing with them.
Media goes out of its way to have a "standard" accent, even regional ones can get so wild people think they are not speaking English but some other language.
The name Coca-Cola refers to it's original ingredients of coca leaves and kola nuts, which was the trade secret. How did you find out!
Of course back then, everything had cocaine in it.
Only a tiny bit! However, that's what Coca-Cola still tastes like today, they kept the same "coke" taste but made it artificial.
