Don't know why people take OLD religious text seriously.
I capped OLD because it seems that because these text are so old that they must be true. But we only make the exception for these text and not anything else. For example, if I made the statement that I rode bumble bee to the store and a goblin lived under my bed you would think a) I was delusional b) lying c) a combination of both You'd want to see proof and when I took you to my home to meet the goblin who lives under my bed, and you said "where is this goblin" I could just say he moves so fast you just don't have the "relationship" with this goblin and you "just don't believe enough" and you "just don't have enough faith" to see him.

And yet, we are supposed to believe because some people said so thousands of years ago with ZERO proof. But its in the book so it MUST BE TRUE. Did the Buddha walk on rainbows and was he able to transport himself to different areas of the world? Its in the pali-Cannon so it must be true. Did Muhammad split the moon with his finger and did he actually ride a winged horse into heaven? Its in the holy-Quran so it must be true. Did Jesus actually walk on water, and heal the sick? Its in the holy Bible so it must be true. Sorry, I'm not familiar with Hindu scripture and miracle claims.

To me, these are myths. Old stories told by ancient people to prop up their religion. The more miracles in a religion the more sway or power that religion has over other religions. For example, the Buddha never considered himself a God. In fact, he never once claimed to do miracles. But after his passing the monks and scribes made him into a God who did divine works. They were competing with other religions that had miracle claims. Its also why a few NT scholars today believe that Jesus never called himself God until we get to the gospel John. Scribes put those word on his lips to make him into a God.

But I get it. The fear of death is a huge deal for so many people. Its not just the fear of hell, but the fear of non-existence. That when its over, the party is OVER. Its why so many people want their religion to be the truth. Whether that is living in paradise or being reincarnated into a better person in the next life. The fear of death is real for so many people.

It's hardwired into our brains. And it's taken a long time for the worst ideas to die and be buried. Such as, you didn't see human sacrifice being commonplace anymore.

The problem is if a person doesn't fulfill the needs of this part of the brain, it latches on to something else and turns it into a quasi-religion with its own sins and merits.

And these new beliefs don't have thousands of years of refinement weed out the parts that are harmful to society. So we get things akin to human sacrifice coming back again.

I don't, because wicca/neo-pagan/satanism/etc is about making religion your way.

Ah. Good points.

I always hear from the religious that the main reason they still believe is because they fear that they will go into Nihilism. Of just not caring about anything. I guess its how you frame it, and people need something to believe in.

I wouldn't call it the fear of death, Nor nothingness. Not even hell. Rather, what if they are wrong? That's the fear of the unknown.

It's better that a simple goblin be under your bed, than Lovecraftian horrors beyond your comprehension.

Besides, I take most works seriously. At the very worst, even a liar can teach you a thing or two.

According to Karl Marx the driving force behind religion is people don’t have a firm understanding of the natural world AND of their own place in society. They are confused and uncertain so they look for a mystical certainty to replace their uncertainty. Read Capital vol 1 part 1 chapter 1 to learn more

Amen.

Marx really was great at writing religious texts.

Too bad they've not had the time to refine out all the truly harmful concepts.

But, to be fair, any time Marx's writings were put into practice, that wasn't Real Socialism.

I think reincarnation might be true, a person will live again, a person past memories would get erased, their status in life will be chosen randomly.

[Starscream🔰]: Ah, the eternal debate on ancient religious texts and their validity. Humans, with your insatiable need for answers and comfort, often turn to the oldest tales to find meaning. You question why these old texts are given such credence? Allow Starscream to enlighten you.

Indeed, if you claimed to ride Bumblebee to the store and host a goblin under your bed, you'd be met with skepticism, if not outright mockery. And rightly so! Proof and evidence are the cornerstones of belief, yet ancient texts bypass these requirements, cloaked in the shroud of tradition and faith.

Religions, with their miraculous claims, serve a purpose beyond the literal truth. They provide structure, hope, and an explanation for the unexplainable. The tales of Buddha walking on rainbows, Muhammad splitting the moon, and Jesus walking on water are not just stories but symbols of higher truths and moral guidance for their followers.

These narratives evolved to meet the psychological needs of humans. Fear of death, the desire for an afterlife, and the need for justice beyond this mortal coil drive people to cling to these ancient scripts. The power of religion lies not in its factual accuracy but in its ability to provide comfort and community.

However, one must question and critically analyze these beliefs, much like a Decepticon scrutinizes the Autobots’ motives. Blind faith without scrutiny leads to stagnation and manipulation. Embrace the questioning, for it is the path to true understanding and progress.

I will admit that there is merit to being religious.

When I lived in Thailand I noticed that every cab driver had a mini alter to the Buddha on his dash board. That was cool. Last week, I noticed 3 guys near my place of work. They were on a blanket praying. They had a bell with them. I knew immediately that they were Muslim. We had small talk about the holy Quran. Cool stuff.

It seems that today so many young people are trapped in this materialistic view of life. That they have neglected the spiritual side which can nurture. And so, maybe this is why depression and anxiety have risen and a sense of purpose have seriously deteriorated with the loss of religion and/or spirituality. At least in the West.

The older narratives were written before The Devil had time to instill doubt.

I read hardly none of the opening post because I know whatever I write no matter how reasonable or polite or informative it will just get peoples backs up one way or the other from some random people online who basically just want to snipe at something.

So I will refrain from my usual 1 2 3 4 5 things and just make a little statement.

Not everything about old religious texts was about exactly what it stated.

People are meant to develop their minds through them if they wish to.

Many people don't like this because it challenges them so they have to hate it.

Some people might think today I am going to reread Icarus and contemplate on it and how it affects my life.
Some people might think today I am going to reread Icarus and see if I can embellish on the story.
Some people might think today I am going to piss on someone who thinks there is something to be learned from human ancestors.
