i think it's someone who specifically makes a lifestyle out of grifting. usually drifters and transients.

gaining people's confidence, whether you've done anything for them or not, is the point of politics. and politicians are typically transient in nature.

I'm not sure putin's really put out a good grift ever. kim jong un puts out some good ones pretty frequently, and trump's audacity has something going for it. putin's grift is that he grifts at all.
