I haven't watched dexter and I find the character unappealing. It comes off as a Syler spin-off that got cancelled. It's just my go-to for 'cultural artifact denoting socially positive serial killer,' the only real alternative being dahmer or hannibal. Both of which are the wrong alignment.
I also do not care about Buffy the character or Buffy's actress. If anything, I was excited to see Royvas again.
The comments do appear to be manufacturing support for a return to the darkverse. (IMO, the same universe Garth Merenghi's Dark Place is set in.) A lot of peoples futures were tied up in that deal, and if it came back it would make the last 20 years of pining worthwhile.
/agree
I'm not a fan of it and have never been a fan of the "glorifying serial killer" franchises, and other reprehensible characters, for the same reason. It's also just a weak hook, despite it sounding like something interesting. I can't see myself getting past objectionable bits even if someone managed to make a good story with it. /shrug
Though, I do have to say I enjoyed "The Sopranos." That's largely because they teased the "thief with a heart of gold" idea so very much, but then shocked the audience with complete turn-arounds so often that every episode had the potential to be a "shocker." It was very well done. :) ("The Godfather" 1&2, as well, for some similar reasons.)
Edit: To stay OT -
For "Buffy" I enjoyed the movie and found some of what the Buffy series presented as "interesting" in terms of world-building, but I was past the age of the target audience by that time and it was just not terribly appealing past the "setting." It's a show I should have enjoyed, but never really got the opportunity to explore. A sort of fantasy "Soap Opera" kind of thing, I guess. :)
yeah agree, either you create an artificial circumstance where they're definitively bad, because serial killing is a bad thing to do, or you have to actually glorify the serial killer. it's a weak contrivance that ruins the series usually.
I know The Sopranos is a misery train-tour of silver linings, and I'm not really ready for that right now.
If I was into Buffy when the memes were hot and fresh and Whedoning wasn't a defined and flanderized style I'd probably be more into it now. Thankfully, my extratemporal life has granted me the ability to dodge the albatross of pining for a dead series.
(I didn't mean to write this post as a series of Buffyisms. The series was simply written in and heavily influenced the English Nerdacular.)
It's an "everyone is a terrible human being" show... Or, perhaps, just a "fatal flaw" attribute that one is encouraged to not move past... :) There may be a few characters that have some kind of redeeming trait, but it's often difficult to see. The irony is slathered on by the shovel-load, so it does turn out to be pretty entertaining.
I take it as it comes and translate it as possible... The theme is strong, though, so that helps.
I was never a fan of the series, but I can see the appeal. When I was very young, I remember "Dark Shadows" the "Soap Opera." My mother used to like it and I sometimes ended up watching it with her. So... I was exposed to that kind of "serious fantasy drama" thing at an early age. That might explain a lot...

We even had the board game... :)
So, the stage was set for me to be interested in a dark fantasy drama series. I just never got hooked. /shrug
I can respect the world-building they did in that show, though, and how fans got attached to it.
Serious drama is a great backboard for comedy. I find the drama itself difficult though; it tends to make me tense and I have too much tension in my life already.
*For some reason it became common wisdom that dark fantasy drama was a recipe for having esoteric forces reach out from beyond the grave to cancel your show.
