Yuck. I got used to freeze dried coffee
I ran out of real drip grind coffee. So I used my emergency jar of freeze dried coffee for a week. I finally went shopping. Just made my first pot of my normal coffee. It tastes strange now. This is so wrong. :(

Have you considered the very real possibility of switching to hot brewed tea instead? I'm certain you'll either love it or hate it and will have an immediate favorite.

Naw. I have drank tea. I don't like it that much. I was gifted a Keurig machine. Never use it. I should try buying a tea assortment.

Roobios might be your flavor... but they also have pink donut, so choose whatever you like.

The downside of tea is that You get yellow teeth from it, so You need to invest at least 100,- to clean them professionally every half a year - and if You don´t clean Your cup after You drank the tea directly it will also turn yellow / brown. With coffee You can drink it - and clean the cup, when You have the next cup of coffee, without any visual long term difference. That´s besides the taste advantage of coffee - and You only need the professional cleaning once a year.

In Australia they don't really do drip coffee. It's pretty much either expresso or instant.

After 4 years of instant I stopped carring about looks. Just inject the caffeine in an IV bag to go please and thankyou

My condolense, dryed coffee is just as bad as it get when you have grinded your own beans for a while (well okay more like store bought not home grown heh).

I keep my own ground beans in the freezer for those kinds of emergencies (in a Folger's can no less). It may be old, and trash by the time I ever get around to using them... but it ain't no instant coffee.

May your contingencies have contingencies.
If it weren't for the levels of acrylamide I'd probably be chewing the beans directly.

I miss real American coffee and I am too lazy to make the proper stuff so the instant coffee is the only way for me to go now.

America you go into a cafe / diner and they just give you unlimited good tasting coffee.

England = you got to pay again for a cup of stuff that tastes inferior to the American stuff.

I buy no name generic instant coffee. I couldn't care less about the perception of how people view that.

It's the caffeine I want. Not a hole in my wallet

An "Emergency Jar of Freeze-Dried Coffee?"

That's like having a suicide pill...

I get it - You're thinking ahead and trying to come up with something that could help you in case the Universe imploded on itself. But, this is not the way.

Here is the way:

"Do I have enough coffee for tomorrow?"

If the answer is no, you go get coffee.

There are a few situations where I would say it is acceptable for you to not have sufficient coffee on hand for at least one full cup at any one time. Among them are:

1) You are about to leave your home with the intent to buy more coffee.

2) You have just gotten divorced and your spouse won custody of your coffee and you have not yet left that day to go buy more.

3) Supervolcano eruption, land shark attack, giant spider infestation, alien mass-abductions, New Coke, Menudo Reunion concert, and other such Tier 1 disasters.

4) "Other," including metaphysical events and space-time fractures and/or Universe End-Of-Service dates.

And, that's about it. Otherwise, do you know where your coffee is?

If you don't have the cash, I understand. But, at some point in your life you must have had enough cash to buy coffee AND create a "Emergency Coffee Stash Cash." Did you not create an Emergency Coffee Stash Cash fund? If you are worried about storing this fund at home, you should contact your financial advisor.

If you don't rate a "financial advisor" then here is what I suggest - Contact the owner of a well appointed locally owned grocery store. Tell them of your concerns and propose this solution - You will pre-pay, at a slightly higher rate, for one large container of either ground coffee (fresh, if possible) or sufficient roasted coffee beans (if you have a grinder). If they agree, then you pay what they ask and receive a contract to supply you with one such container upon demand when you present them with your signed copy of said contract.

Store the contract in a cool, dry, safe, place and... you're set. In the event any of the above has prevented you from being a responsible coffee consumer, you will have one last Golden Ticket for a container of coffee... unless you forget to think about whether or not you have coffee. And, if that ever happens... do you even coffee?

At no time since I was a starving college student have I ever not had enough ground coffee in my place of residence for at least one mug of brewed coffee being possible. ("Probably" - I've had several occasions to be very ill or otherwise indisposed/occupied, so it's possible a day may have passed when I was deficient in supply.)

PS: 'Cause Valve gave away free internet ink
I used to brew multiple half-pots of drip per day. Now I use instant. I prefer it over k-cups. I have fewer cups of coffee per day, each one mixed as strong as a want at that moment. If I have beans, I use a press or pour-over.

Instant is also good for quick iced coffee, and for adding coffee flavor to baked goods or desserts. (Highly underrated ingredient, because many people never allow the stuff into their homes to begin with.)
