Because "science" has been hijacked by the Corporate Elite and their authoritarian sheep.
The same reason why people latch on to other conspiracy theories.
im surprised that person is not from Florida

What's your source that most people believed it was flat?
However I admit, history itself is a cluttery mess so that could be wrong, my whole point was pointing out that back then we didn't really believe there was anything beyond Europe, Africa, India, the Asia Nations and Australia only to suddenly discover North and South America (and even Antarctica to a degree, I know it was mapped prior but its like how New Zealand was mapped but never explored till later)
I won't make any claims to say they did say such, as back then people also used to claim science was witchcraft so frankly the idea of them saying that there was an edge to the planet didn't seem outlandish to diswade wouldbe explorers I guess.
