Does anyone like Depth of Field or Motion Blur?
Just curious, I find them to be ugly effects and turn them off in every game I play. I think the point is to hide bad view distance textures and screen tear? Buuut I don't like. Do you like?

Why are you having screen tear in 2024?

I'm not and I didn't say I was.

in the right game and at the right moment ,which is usually during a cinematics or cutscenes , these effects can actually look great.

the problem is many games just put the effects there , make them way too strong and noticeable , leave them on normal gameplay all the time and think it's fine.
I don't mind DoF so much, it can be fine in cinematics. Motion blur will be instantly disabled.

I might hate "dirty lens" effects the most, like water drops etc. Yeah thanks for reminding me that there is a camera. In Ancient Egypt. Very realistic.

I turn them off in games.

That's not the same but I hate that too. If it is used as an effect in some cutscenes, fine, but not all the time everywhere.
Yeah, I like them when they're used right.

Motion blur more like motion blurgh and screw field of veiw. It always give me motion sickness if not sett properly.

The more people want to make video games look like movies the more I want these posers to get out of the niche writ large. That's what I think of depth of field, motion blur, Hideo Kojima, Naughty Dog, Sony, and The Chinese Room.

I hate film grain effect. The water hitting on you is kinda realistic since that is what happens if you are out in the rain.

No it isn't. Do you ever see water drops when you're in the rain? It only happens with a camera.
Motion Blurr was only great to ever be used in Racing & Flying Games...

It sucked in everything else...

Motion Blurr was there so that when you drifted around corners
with your Cars, that the tail end of the car with the lights & such on it,
would blurr as it goes around the corner of the tracks, & streets...

Need For Speed as Example...

It would also be great for things like stunts in Airplane Games,
or like when your Plane would streamline through the air a lot...

But, who the heck wants it in a Fighting Game,
who the heck wants it in an Elder Scrolls Game??

It has no purpose being there, oO

Depth Of Field on the other hand??

I've had it on & had it off...

They say that the Games only have it because it's supposed to
symbolize as a means of rendering issue, or that fog does it for you...

But in all honesty?? I actually like Depth of Field...

I actually thought Games looked better with it On...

Games just look more Realistic with it On...

When you take Depth Of Field Off & Away in your Games,
they just look tooo one Dimention, & too Flat looking,
but that is just me...

It's like the supposed Fog Of War in an RTS Game,
if you take it away?? All you have is an entirely bright
looking Map to Explore, it ruins the Atmosphere of the Game...

When you had Fog Of War, it brought shadowing,
& darkness to your Games, & it only added, & made
Star Craft look more creepier when you had it On...

Yet, when you have it entirely Off, it just looks
way tooo one Dimension, & just doesn't look that great...

The best part about Depth Of Field & Fog Of War,
& Fog, is that you can Control how far, near & dense
it is in your Settings, & 70 to 90 has always been
what I felt looked great for it... As far as Density,
I always felt that depended on how foggy you wanted it...

The worst Games I have ever found to work in Settings
for, has always been F13th The Game, & Heavy Rain
on Computer...

No matter what Settings I used, the Games always looked the same...

Star Craft 2 actually looked far better without majority
of my Settings turned On for some reason, & I don't know why...

The worker bots when the sparks would fly,
looked too faded & thick when you saw sparks,
& the characters, ships, & bases all looked
faded, & discolored if you turned Raised your
Textures to anything above lowest Setting in Game...

But if you left it all on Lowest Setting in Game
for Textures, then everything else most majority
in Game would actually be Disabled in your Settings...

And most majority of those Settings didn't
improve anything anyways... I was told later
that it was a GPU / CPU rendering issue in
Star Craft 2 at fault there, but it didn't matter to me...

Dynasty Warriors 9, actually looked fantasticly realistic,
no matter what Setting I had turned On in the Game,
just soo much as I didn't use to lowest settings in the Game...

You Disagree?

I usually use motion blur. So yes, i like it, kinda.
metamec May 4, 2024 @ 2:41am
Motion blur is usually deployed to counter chopiness not tearing. It smooths the transitions when the frame rate is low or inconsistent.

When it's enabled by default, it often doesn't bother me but I will disable it if it's causing problems. I would never have it enabled in multiplayer games.
