the only way it would work is if they started a beforetimes cult, where the social rules and norms they've internalized are still relevant. it would have to be the same brutalist cult as the ones everyone else is making, in order to survive. and in a sense would be a self-fulfilling goal. the comfort of your beforetimes cult, and its use as a rallying standard, is its only real reward. like House without the lasers and robots and intact hotels.
also high iq may be good common sense
And yes, that means the lucky ones are those who die in a nuclear blast. At least they won't have to suffer. Also, it's more likely that some head of state being voted out or similarly deposed would be so petty as to press the little red button or that a nation with some manner of Samson Option is put into a position where they actually need to use it.
I mean you're more likely to see someone blatantly circumvent MAD instead of just using bioweapons, hackers, propaganda or paid shills to do so subversively. The minute someone does that a la the Star Wars program but it actually works everyone is going to nuke them at once. Though you're still more likely to see some socialist spud slap that nuclear strike button because they didn't get their way.
What's that Common Sense score?
Like, common sense is fine in a normal emergency to do well enough.
The end of society as we know it isn't exactly one of those times.
I don't think anyone will do well in the end times. High IQ or otherwise.
