I don't know how to pet cat
Doggos love me. That full-on rubdown, back belly and sides, scruff of the neck, I got doggos down.

Cats let me pet them for like 3 strokes then claw and bit the bejeezus out of my hand. Why I do wrong?

Massage around the ears.

Do long strokes down the cat's back in only one direction (head to tail).

Do not touch the tail. Do not touch the sides. Do not reverse the direction.

The cat will start purring if content. Drool on your lap. Then claw you!

Congratulations you have patted a cat!

okay, so cats have feeler hairs about 2-3cm below the base of their ears. they may let you touch this area, but if you touch it too much it's like you're rubbing pubic hair out of place.

that's probably why you're getting scratched.

Patting triggers overstimulation aggression in most cats.

If you are patting a cat for a while and they are even acting extremely happy with it, you are bound to get drooled upon and clawed. Normally the cat will start kneading it's claws in and out of your pants.

I'm honestly more of a dog person, but my friend's cat does that all the time and utterly loves jumping into my lap when I'm sitting down for pats and attention, till oops too much.

Don't pet the back end. If they raise their rear when you touch it, you're tickling a dragon.

the butt-raising is involuntary; it's an intense erogenous zone.

Like I said...
Depends on the cat

Mostly:

Top of head: Safe , and good place to start
Under chin / side of chin: Safe, but wait until the cat is cuddly

Some cats:
Lower back / root of tail (NOT tail itself): Very nice

cat lingo:

Raised tail: HI!
Calm waving tail: I am relaxed
Twitchy/ flicking/ jerky tail: GRRRR

Belly up cat you know: Pet me / trap!
Belly up cat you don't know: TRAP!

Cats aren't as robust as dogs. Even cat sized dogs tend to have a sturdier skeletal structure. You might be playing a bit too rough if you're describing it as a full-on rubdown.

Try gently rubbing the nose bridge, between the eyes, with the grain of the fur. In my personal experience a cat will usually enjoy that. They'll close their eyes and maybe tilt their heads up. I think I've even gotten a few to fall asleep that way.

Scratch behind their ears and in the center of their head. Most cats don't like their feet, sides, or stomach touched. Most cats like their chin scratched. Pretty much just pet their back, for whatever reason I seem to use fingertips mainly. We had cats growing up.

If a cat rolls over touching their stomach will 99% end with the claws of all 4 paws converging into your arm.

Aren't treats the way to win the heart of all living things?

I mean that's one way... if you're fine with your "fluffy friend" eating your corpse if you happen to expire because all you are is a food dispenser to them...

I don't agree with that line of thinking and prefer not to use food to trick my dog into doing things, and so far it's been a very rewarding strategy. my doggo loves me for reasons beyond food.

So you think/hope. Hunger in dogs can get the best of them and after they eat all the food in the house and you are dead they will start eating you as well. No matter how well you trained them hunger will prevail over training.
Have a seat. Have at least two treats. Place one on the ground in front of you and the other in your hand. Sit in a relaxed position. If they eat the one in front of you they'll look for the next one. They trust the treat in your hand so they have to decide if its worth it.

What would you need it for at that point? Animals are senseless, they carry this skeleton around for years and then just leave it laying around one day. And they know this, yet still can't help but remain concerned about it. Having become very used to taking care of their skeleton.

pets are fun tho, eh?
If You put gloves on the cat - or shoes - they can´t use their claws. Also if You fixate them onto something, like with nails on a cross, they can´t move - so You can pet them all day long without worries. It´s an action You do for Yourself - not for the cat after all. Toy cats, but made out of real cat pelt, have the same effect - perhaps they need to feature some button to make the one or other cat sound.
