Does alcoholism improve gaming performance?
What do you think? There lack studies investigating the effects of alcoholism on gaming performance. I believe that contributors in Steam Off-Topic could shed some light on the topi, since I believe they would be the most experienced.

Myself, I only drink alcohol occassionally, and though I have felt as if my reaction time had improved after consuming some alcohol, I do not believe that it was actually the case. Rather, it was simply that the "buzz" one gets after ingesting alcohol made it feel like I had suddenly become better. Perhaps if I were to be addicted to alcohol the results would have be different, but I digress.

Please, post your opinions and experiences.

Actually a good question.

I do not really drink anymore as I decided to spare my health.
But a while ago I still did drink and almost only when gaming on weekends and such.

I personally observed that my performance in video games always massively decreased due to not being focused, losing interest in games, being more focused on the music I was listening to and so on and on.

I don't even think it was more fun, I always ended up focusing solely on music clips at the end before turning my computer off.

The only advantage I have noticed was that being social with other players on discord, teamspeak or wherever, was a lot more fun and active, especially when the other had a few beer as well.

Other than that, I am glad I stopped, life including gaming is generally more fun being not drunk or under the influence to any extend.
Only if you have rhythm? If you don't, you don't.
Ever game while stoned?

Ikari Warriors is WAY WAY too fast.

I've played 6000 hours worth of Dota 2, quite a bit in ranked matches and well yes...

I've played it sober and I've played it drinking.

It doesn't improve your hand-eye coordination as such, but rather calms you to just play without worrying of the outcomes. It's a more reaction accordingly. It relaxes the muscles and gives you what could be labelled as "liquid courage". Which is just masking any anxiety or emotion. Music and rhythm also become more enjoyable with it.

It's not that your reaction timing has improved as such, but rather there's no hesitation before that reaction. You act more on impulse.

This will all depend on what type of alcohol you are drinking and how much, plus how good you are actually at the game too.

It's no magical pro gamer drink, that's for sure.

You have to be creative, if it's a live ranked match:

Sadly as says every drunk who has ever been caught drink driving/dui.

I think you are correct.
After drinking 2 and a half cases of beer my vision goes blurry for some odd reason. Yet someone can drink 6 or 7 bottles of gin and see fine and walk straight.
try to play forza when you drunk ^_^

First year of college, my roommate and I did a test. We'd drink a beer then play a round each of Test Drive on the C-64.

By the sixth, neither of us could even complete the course.

I'll refrain from sharing the other test results as they might encourage dangerous behavior.

When I'm drinking my skill sky rockets at all the games i play and i become completely unbeatable.

I become gods gift to games. :emofdr:

you forgot your pirate patch, arrrrrrrgh - had to get mine from the car and see if it works just like IRL - I may not respond with results until tomorrow...
You can't drive well when drunk, what makes you think you can game better when drunk?

Being drunk will negatively affect all your activities. Gaming included.

Having your reaction times slown down 10x is not conductive to trying to get headshots in CS2 or spells in Dota 2.

As a cofactor whose primary benefit is edging out other complications which might reduce skill, yes. Sort of the inverse of its relationship to cancer as a cofactor.

Otherwise it causes a gradual long-term systemic nerve depression, which can be temporarily aleviated through use of more alcohol. A rare few individuals' nervous systems are specifically primed for this and will experience more drawbacks if they quit than if they continue drinking. This isn't simple FEAS motorneuronal activation; it's ... unnatural, basically, and the mechanisms are very poorly understood in contemporary research literature.

Stims provide temporary boosts but limit overall neurological growth, and typically have diminishing returns over time unless an individual has some kind of mutation similar to the alcohol co-dependency genome.

Yeah gets my blood pumping. Peak heartrate while high was around 172. Clears a lot of the mental clutter inbetween me and my wires. Things like my FoF routine, threat assessment, and the geospatial processessing necessary to run and hide correctly. Although mostly it just makes me too bloodthirsty to try; I can be goaded into guerilla tactics over time and will lose interest in them much more slowly. Makes me patient.

The THC compatiability gene is a little bit more common than the others, but for people who aren't compatiable I'd imagine it being difficult.

Retains average skill growth, but if you're used to 'learning' something one day and implementing it the next it'll most likely inhibit that growth pattern. Your brain will can and should copy the algo into its larger manifold, but it's just not going to have the same hookups and associations as your sober mind would give it, most likely.

I know it's fun to drink while gaming but be careful. Before you know it, you'll have liver disease.
