Does alcoholism improve gaming performance?
What do you think? There lack studies investigating the effects of alcoholism on gaming performance. I believe that contributors in Steam Off-Topic could shed some light on the topi, since I believe they would be the most experienced.

Myself, I only drink alcohol occassionally, and though I have felt as if my reaction time had improved after consuming some alcohol, I do not believe that it was actually the case. Rather, it was simply that the "buzz" one gets after ingesting alcohol made it feel like I had suddenly become better. Perhaps if I were to be addicted to alcohol the results would have be different, but I digress.

Please, post your opinions and experiences.

NO NO NO!

For 12 years I was a full blown drunk. Started drinking at 7 am every morning, went till I passed out, woke up, started again till I passed out, and on and on and on.

I rarely if ever games, and when I did it was a total disaster.

You're pretty close OP: Alcohol impairs executive function. While inebriated, you have a diminished capacity to accurately judge your own performance.

Yeah.
I'd like to say the last 20 years have been flawless, but for the most part I am doing it sober.

I was certainly much better at playing Rock Band after a few dozen beers.

Or, at least, Rock Band was certainly much more fun after a few dozen beers.

Glad to hear that! I hope it stays good for you and game on.

I would assume stimulants would be better than alcohol, not that I'm recommending taking any.

That'd certainly explain all of the "gamer supplements" on the market.

Playing video games is almost 100% hand-eye coordination, so we don't really need a video game specific study because being drunk hurts the relevant motor skills.

Also, you believe you're playing better, you've got to remember....

Yer drunk. Drunk people are rarely known to make the best judgements.

depends on the video game, in my experience, playing racing games drunk has improved my performance by at least 95% :p

Well, even sober I still fall down all the time and forget where I am. :steammocking:
