Converting albums to mp3's
Have you done any?
I have done some in the past but newer tech makes it nicer.

Thomas Dolby - Golden age of Wireless
now doing
Fripp and Summers - I Advance Masked

FLAC and OGG are pretty much interchangeable imo
I have mostly .flac in my library, so I still think they're cool! :D

Actually though, it might be a toss-up with .aiff because that's how a lot of labels release

You know, I have to wonder how many people have a system where they can actually tell any difference. If all you're using is blutooth buds, it probably doesn't even matter.

I notice the difference even with my earbuds, but the reason I'm so picky is that I need everything to sound good in a live setting on turntables or it's useless to me. Even though I kinda don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about playing live anymore lol

It's the principle of the thing, dammit! D:<

I've got a whole listening room set up and a while ago I found some old MP3 Napster files I had stashed in a folder and holy hell 128k is just 🤢

I've been picking up albums in vinyl though lately because they're back on store shelves, now. Oh, my, they just sound so goooooood. 😃
Yeah, it's a good thing that vinyl is making a comeback.

Have you any experience with the laser turntables? Is it worth upgrading from a needle player?
I always made sure to put nice sleeves in to replace what came with it. If it had art I'd keep it in there with the album. Nice how my albums are 50 plus years old in some cases and are fairly perfect still. Totally clean. Great how long they last if you care for them even minimally.

Actually have some duplicates from wearing them out. But I got those CDs years ago when available.

I don't personally, no. But from what I understand, the key benefit is that it doesn't degrade the physical media since there's nothing contacting the surface. I don't think sound quality or stability really changes, and they're probably expensive to repair if that comes up.

If you want to be able to play your records a bunch of times without worrying they'll wear down, it might be worth it? That, and a laser won't scratch anything if it's bumped or improperly handled or something.

I think it's fairly unlikely you'll run into wear issues with a decent stylus type under normal use, though.

There is and has been a helluva lot of self-important (internal) snobbery around audio forever. I have wondered this for decades although it's fun to mess around with. I'm happy to use 256 or 320 .mp3's these days.

I mean for most stuff yeah it's probably fine. But classical music.

Man. I don't know what it is about classical music, but I can tell when just ONE of the EQ settings are off. You better believe I can tell when it's coming from an MP3 or a Vinyl. At loud volumes, in my listening room, it's like they're right there with the vinyl. The MP3 sounds like I'm playing it on AM or something.

I prefer baroque.

It is a bit fun to play around with spacializer settings and make it sound like a cathedral contained entirely in your shower.

I've already got anything that was more in my strike zone years ago.

It's more like catching up on the B sides.

Ah, Chamber Music. Maybe on special occasions, but it's not something I collect. I mean I have a few Bach CDs.
I rip all my albums into flac. No need to worry about space got tons of it. Plus flac plays great on my phone.

Probably a combination of classical's massively larger dynamic range than your average pop master, and the fact that mic'd acoustic strings don't translate so well to digital

I've often wondered if the perfect recording/playback setup is two speakers, two tracks PER INSTRUMENT.

Just ... as a thought experiment. I realize how impracticable that would be.
