"Oh! This is a Masterpiece!"
The word masterpiece is being used very loosely nowadays. I've seen subpar games called masterpieces, and boring movies worshipped like living gods.

Recently I watched the movie "Challengers" with Zendaya. I was appalled by how many reviewers are calling it a masterpiece. Many others are calling it a true love story (which it's not).

Not sure how this happened, but as consumers our standards have dropped lower than ever. How can we improve the sad state of games and movies? It seems like the only move that works is boycotting. It worked against Target and Bud Light last year.

Masterpiece doesn't mean perfect, I should point out.

It’s subjective, or changes through generations, filters through demographics at the time

There was a popular song with that word as the main lyric, but that passed. Literally everything was being called a masterpiece because people simply liked saying the word. I thought that completely died out about 10 years ago. Oh well.

It would help if we could establish what exactly we mean when we use the word “masterpiece” to describe a piece of media.

And I don’t mean vague language like, “It means that it’s really, really good.” No, give an actual, concrete definition with clear boundaries that set it apart from other works.

That’s the problem with words: we use them without fully understanding what they mean. Just like the term “overrated” that I still have seen nobody give an explanation for, yet people are calling everything overrated now-a-days.

I haven't watched it though I'm a die-hard Fallout fan.
hard to find a new movie worth calling it
Same with calling a person a “legend”, or “greatest of all time”.

People so seem so eager to display that they have exquisite tastes or were among the first to recognize something as exceptional that they just toss words around now.

It's not only standards but also fanboyism and plain parroting. Words don't mean anything anymore.

The words "awesome" and "epic", amongst others, say hello.
There's also literally a dispute over the real definition of literally.
The game was rigged from the start!
