Roman Polanski's movies are one of the best in cinematography
Many good movies out there, not starting a best movies warthread, but the new generation of younger movies fans might be completely unaware of the existence of the old movies, such as Repulsion, The Tenant, Chinatown and many more just to name a few, which stand the test of time. Almost all of Polanski's movies are highly impactful to say the least.

The art of a movie is not to make you ask 100 questions after you watched it (like David Lynch for example who creates nothing but junk mysticism), but to make you glued to the movie what happens next and when it is over you understand and feel the whole movie as if you experienced it yourself. That is how good Polanski used to be to relay the movie to everyone.

I doubt anyone would disagree here that he was one of the best we have seen for a century. Nowadays times changed and people have less appreciation of the art and enjoy crap like Marvel and Disney, yawn. It is not their fault, they are just bombarded by eternal pursuit for money by DIsney and they don't sponsor independent film directors who could make movies on the level of Polanski

The art of making movies is basically dead. Maybe only Villeneuve left.
You think Eraserhead is junk mysticism?

It was well made but overly pessimistic and utopian movie. David Lynch is cool for the kids until you meet Polanski

Don't get me wrong, for example Repulsion is also pessimistic movie but it is not utopian but very real

Has as much to do with the cinematographer as the director. Says a lot about movie fans (including us) that we can't even name five of them.

But are his films really that amazing to look at? Chinatown might be in my top five, but I can't say it is on par with anything Kubrick did visually at that time.

Visually I don't think anyone can come close to George Miller :)
But in cinema it is not always about the visual but the experience and how close you relate to it. Because even minimalistic visuals can make your heart boiling
Too had he's a horrible person.

If you think he's a scumbag, don't Google Chaplin's personal life. That's a doozy.

Yep, so is Luc Besson and he still made great movies.

You mean the one called "the world`s worst director"?
Calling the stuff he made art is kinda stretching it, he is more of a cult director. :lunar2019grinningpig:

Yeah really it is. But, i still like some of his movies.

I believe Cronenberg made some of the best movies ever even in later years, and his earlier are mostly good too. Altho his movies often have a provocative and macabre tone, it is all in a good way. Heck, i could write an essay on his movie making.

Repulsion is great. It really shocked me for a 1965 film, and Catherine Deneuve was just the perfect protagonist. It's one of those films that really showcased her versatility as a young actress I think. I'm not sure about Polanski's other films. I was a bit young when I saw a couple of his others.

The Ninth Gate is one of my all-time favorites from Polanski.

You clearly lack the sophistication and intellect to appreciate such a cinematic genius! 🤣
You and your Scorsese and Coppola and Polanski! HACKS, ALL OF THEM!
