Americans can't afford travel?
The US State Department estimates that 37 per cent of the population has a valid passport.

Are Americans uncultured or is travel too expensive?

The world's not a mystery anymore, and I think people have lost their will to travel it.

As an American, I personally would say both. The travelling part isn't expensive (in fact it has gotten cheaper) but booking a hotel or something is pretty expensive if you want a decent one you can feel comfortable and safe sleeping in. I also don't really have any reason to travel, since I find all those typical tourist cities like Paris or Miami to be overcrowded, overwhelming, and talked about so much that there is nothing special to really see there.

.... America is big. They have no need to go out of the borders. Moreover, "most" just dont care about what's NOT the US, at least that's the going trope and stereotype - you always hear more the vocal people, and the vocal people are usually the outrageously dumb ones.

Most of us do not travel out of the country (United States has tons of vacation destinations) and we do not need a passport for in country travel...Getting a passport is a bit of a hassle and unnecessary for day to day life...Travel can be expensive, but it really depends on the destination, the carrier and what you intend to do...Uncultured?...I do not consider people who do not travel out of country much to be uncultured...Why would you?...

What about to learn about other cultures or where they originally came from?

Most people left the place they came from and came to America for a good reason. Because America is better. And other cultures aren't really as interesting as they think they are. That's why they all adopt American ways, worldwide.

Does garrison count as travel? Garrison does not seem to even need a passport.

Most European vacation destinations resemble the third world now anyway.

I can go down to the local Walmart and experience that for free.
Oh, and to answer the topic question, yes, most Americans are uncultured and travel is too expensive.

Plus Americans have been consistently broke thanks to the unstable economy since 2008, and are even more so now than ever under the current administration.
Everything in America is too expensive

including escaping

That said, I've traveled internationally a fair amount, but never on my own dime. Even though my parents are "poor" boomers, they're still from the generation that gobbled up all the money and purposefully left nothing for the rest of us, so they can afford it.

With more than half of Americans struggling just to pay their monthly rent/mortgage, traveling is a dead dream in the US. I used to travel every year, spending anywhere between $12k - $15k just on myself. Part of the reason is I only fly first class, and I only stay in 5-star hotels.

I already traveled to all the countries that interested me, so I don't fly overseas anymore. I just go to the beach for a week, and stay at a beach front hotel.

This is true. Europe has less and less to offer every year. Most people I know who do travel overseas for vacation end up going to places like Japan, which tends to cost more for a flight, given the greater distance from most US locations.

And it's not only that Europe is starting to look more and more third world, but any semblance of culture they may have once had has been replaced with something more familiar. They speak English, like Americans. Wear the same style clothes as Americans. Listen to the same music, and watch the same movies, most of which are American.

If they'd stop trying to emulate us there might be more worth exploring there.

You don't need a passport to travel in the US. We aren't a bunch of tightly packed countries.

Traveling needs to be made easy and flexible. That's what for example EU is for.

The freedom of travel between countries, that is accessible, fast and cheap. I'm hesitant to take vacations outside the EU because it's just made so simple (Schengen area). Several other benefits too like 50 GB of mobile data in all EU countries per month, and unlimited in all Nordic countries. And if you exceed the 50 GB, you pay $1/day for extra data. Never have to hunt for Wi-Fi ever again. GPS is always on me when exploring and hiking.

Overall, the traveling is just made so easy and flexible. And the cultural richness that Europe offers is absolutely indisputable, going from one part to another.

No need to worry about currencies either (euro standard).
Payment cards work like a charm and so on.

For those who are on serious budget, we have several cheap flight providers here such as Ryanair and Wizz Air. If you hunt for deals, you can catch 10-20$ flights easily from one European country to another.

I've never heard of American taking a $10 flight.
But I've actually heard of European taking a $5 flight.

So yea, overseas traveling just tends to be more of an European thing for many reasons.
