I don't know about Acer but def never try an Asus laptop. I have one and it's horrible.

Acer has built a reputation for good bang-for-buck laptops, however they tend not to be exceptional in any way.

Personally, I'd go for a Lenovo ThinkPad or a Framework laptop. Right now, the ThinkPad is a must because the TrackPoint is simply the best pointing device on a laptop.
Idk why, but another appeal of a Thinkpad is the durability. Those things are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unkillable no matter what you do to them. You could cut one in half and it would probably still boot up
Reminds me of the time I dropped mine, and left a dent in the floor with no damage to the laptop.
My Acer Aspire (Windows Vista Home Premium) only just died last month... got nearly a decade and a half out of it... ironically I bought a "better" Aspire (Windows 7 Home Premium) after that and it died about 4 years ago... they were both horses despite not being particularly looked after well...:-)

Dells are pretty good, but a bit slow. I'm using a retired business model 2012 Dell latitude E6330, with a core i5 v-pro. The only thing that sucks about it is the hard drive speeds, and it can only be upgraded to 8 gb of ram. But it's reliable.
Why don't you get an SSD for it?
Cause what's the point? It's a 12 year old laptop, I could upgrade it or at that rate just buy a new laptop.
I wouldn't invest in a laptop unless my intention was to have it be an extension of my desktop.

Like, I wouldn't buy a gaming Laptop or anything. They're notorious for being difficult to work on.

My laptops are just meant for accessing the web or debugging code when I'm not near my PC and don't wanna use my phone as a UI.
My old ASUS lives for like more than 10 years now. If you think what to take - choose ASUS.

https://frame.work/ are the only laptops I'm ever using from now on.
Those laptops look great! Thanks so much for the link / info
Had one and it was trash. It crashed, barely any replaceable parts, and the sound bugged out. Found it again late last year and threw it in the trash where it belongs.
i am more asus
Acer is junk.
I am pretty sure i wouldn't choose Acer before many others. But, as i never owned any, i really can't say for sure about the performance of the brand.
I'll second and third the ASUS recommendations.

Can it run PC games smoothly?
The thing about ThinkPads is that they are super reliable, but they don't come with a powerful GPU, so you have to have an iGPU that will be connected via thunderbolt, and the CPU is not the fastest, of course, nor the best of the mobile line chips ups but above average. And as you can guess, the first-hand price is also high. Second hand, you will most likely get one from an IT office for very cheap.

a basic SSD can be had below $20 USD, and should be a very easy upgrade especially considering how easy it is to access the HDD on the E6330 (I had an E6320 once and was able to swap drives very quckly on that thing)
I got an Acer laptop a couple months ago for work, I like it a lot and have no complaints or issues with it.

It's kind of funny for me to see people here recommending Asus. I've had an Asus "gaming laptop" for years and the thing is honestly a pile of hot garbage, and it has the space bar of death (something that Asus is apparently known for which I did not know at the time of purchase) even after attempts at rebooting/reformatting. Many gaming sessions and documents and such were ruined because of that space bar, so in good conscience I could never agree with an Asus recommendation.
