Watching friends part ways has always had a big effect on me in stories. Watching one of those characters cry because of it has an even bigger effect on me
"Aren't you going to kiss her goodbye?"
"No."
*drives off into the night*
It's a duology about violence, that includes war, and the different motivations that the separate characters have for committing mass killings. Some of them are just actual sociopaths, while others just want to save their own family.
The whole series ends with a nuclear bomb exploding in Miami, with all the characters who survived up until that point just accepting their deaths. It's the ultimate and final show of violence, yet it's made bittersweet by their acceptance of it, maybe in whatever comes next they will find the peace that they deserve. One day all of us will have to die, but let's just remember that, "Leaving this world isn't as scary as it sounds", and after it's all over, only dust will remain. Speaking of which, this gives a whole new context to this song: https://youtu.be/phL6fDiYNJk
