TikTok to be banned in US

If someone reads this or uses these forums. It's unlikely that they use TikTok. Many people do.

The reason that it's going to be banned is as you may have heard due to the access to so many people's data and it poses a national security risk.

What data? I've no clue really. What I do know is if their reasoning is to protect consumers data, then TikTok isn't the only service or product that should be banned. There's quite a few out there.

Late last year, TikTok was forced to admit that it used this same data to spy on individual Americans, including journalists. Without question, TikTok is a Trojan Horse.

At least 27 states and the federal government have banned the use of the app on government devices. My advice: If you or someone in your family insists on using TikTok, install it on a separate device, like an old smartphone. Don’t connect that device to your home network. Use a cellular connection to get online.

Several states have also banned a few other Chinese-owned apps and platforms. This list includes Weibo, WeChat, and Alibaba.

There's others. Temu, SHEIN, CapCut.

There's also the products.

The FCC banned sales and imports of Huawei devices in November, citing national security concerns.

Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Oppo have faced similar accusations. A recent report found Chinese-made Android phones include “an alarming number” of preinstalled apps that grant dangerous privileges.

There's also drones. The most popular made by DJI

So there's a lot and I have no clue how far it reaches. China makes 1/3 of the products the US uses and with a law as stated in the DJI quote, it's likely to be something we hear about so much that we get bored about hearing how yet another product is banned in the US.

Think to all China's owned products, services and companies out there. The anti-cheat software. The DRM. The digital distributors. The publishers and devs. Think of all of the games Tencent owns.

It's hard to believe that the US goverment is being tasked with this, regulating technology. Are they going to double down and have a 3rd party that's more efficient handle it for them or are they going to be criticized for being hypocrites? This is so odd to me. And to top it off, say a republican was in office for the next term, they'll be lax on pushing this forward.

…The bill wasn't about banning Tiktok. It was about giving the president unilateral authority to ban any site or service they dislike for any reason. It doesn't even have to be for an actual national security threat, it could just be to silence dissent or to, oh I don't know, rig an election. It will probably be used to justify banning Twitter at some point if it does passes. Probably by August or September, given the timeframe the bill specifies for how long the company has to sell.

Plus if you think the dual citizens who comprise a considerable majority of Congress care about national security when they have zero national loyalty, then I have a bridge to sell you.

Not that I disagree with you, but wasn't it the Senate/House that passed the TikTok ban, not the President?

iirc Trump tried to Presidentially ban TikTok, but this particular ban was voted on.

He didn't veto or even pocket veto it. It isn't as bad as Trump trying to ban it personally and the law was sandwiched with other measures (how is that even a thing?) but the fact he let it pass with little resistance doesn't make Biden blameless for this.

Well the facial recognition tech is on many cameras, and there's "technically" a social credit score in regards to loans, I think it's called "Credit score" AFAIK. However the USA govt hasn't gone full China govt yet.

Otherwise they would've also took down Facebook, Instagram, Discord, Reddit, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. as well due "national security concerns" in regards to data siphoning ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah. It's quite unsettling to think people in our government abuse power in this manner, to threaten, and extort companies to selling to people within their own group is straight out of the playbook of organized crime. We should not accept this behavior.

They're not, they're setting a precedent to ban anything they don't own and control. If you think that's going to work out to YOUR benefit, or to the benefit of anyone who isn't in a position of power, you've been misled.
