TikTok to be banned in US
If someone reads this or uses these forums. It's unlikely that they use TikTok. Many people do.

The reason that it's going to be banned is as you may have heard due to the access to so many people's data and it poses a national security risk.

What data? I've no clue really. What I do know is if their reasoning is to protect consumers data, then TikTok isn't the only service or product that should be banned. There's quite a few out there.

Late last year, TikTok was forced to admit that it used this same data to spy on individual Americans, including journalists. Without question, TikTok is a Trojan Horse.

At least 27 states and the federal government have banned the use of the app on government devices. My advice: If you or someone in your family insists on using TikTok, install it on a separate device, like an old smartphone. Don’t connect that device to your home network. Use a cellular connection to get online.

Several states have also banned a few other Chinese-owned apps and platforms. This list includes Weibo, WeChat, and Alibaba.

There's others. Temu, SHEIN, CapCut.

There's also the products.

The FCC banned sales and imports of Huawei devices in November, citing national security concerns.

Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Oppo have faced similar accusations. A recent report found Chinese-made Android phones include “an alarming number” of preinstalled apps that grant dangerous privileges.

There's also drones. The most popular made by DJI

A DJI drone with a thermal-imaging camera is seen in Menlo Park, Calif., March 3, 2019. Chinese-made drones could pose a national security risk to the United States due to laws in China that force companies to provide authorities access to user data, two U.S. agencies say in a new memo.

So there's a lot and I have no clue how far it reaches. China makes 1/3 of the products the US uses and with a law as stated in the DJI quote, it's likely to be something we hear about so much that we get bored about hearing how yet another product is banned in the US.

Think to all China's owned products, services and companies out there. The anti-cheat software. The DRM. The digital distributors. The publishers and devs. Think of all of the games Tencent owns.

It's hard to believe that the US goverment is being tasked with this, regulating technology. Are they going to double down and have a 3rd party that's more efficient handle it for them or are they going to be criticized for being hypocrites? This is so odd to me. And to top it off, say a republican was in office for the next term, they'll be lax on pushing this forward.

Those are distributed by a company owned by Americans though so it's perfectly fine /s.
It's not a legal offense or anything, what he was saying is that we simply can't escape that content anymore even if TikTok is banned.
I just now realised it's worse then that. Currently you can escape it by not using tiktok, but if all the creators there move to YouTube it will be in all our recommendations whether we want it to be or not.

It won't be banned...The parent company will sell to someone who will let them siphon some information for a fee...

I wonder if America has or will have the big Firewall like they do in China. But I'm surprised Temu and Shein are listed whilst AliExpress isn't and even has distribution centres in America.

Give it time, america is using fascist china as its model. The difference though is Israel provides america's cyber security.

Assuming that they even bow down to the unconstitutional law, TikTok would most likely be worthless, as under Chinese law, social media algorithms require government approval to be sold.

I'd rather not use any perverted software, thank you very much. The United States needs to urgently adopt the European Union's General Data Privacy Regulation (which should be international law).

and we purchase and install it ourselves!
Bootstraps! Making the FBI's job easier is my patriotic duty.
Not always! I remember back in 2020 or 2021 some government spyware app secretly installed itself onto my phone!

Plus yknow, everyone with a phone or a PC is getting spied on 24/7 on those things.

They don't need to install spy software, when backdoors are built into the hardware

…The bill wasn't about banning Tiktok. It was about giving the president unilateral authority to ban any site or service they dislike for any reason. It doesn't even have to be for an actual national security threat, it could just be to silence dissent or to, oh I don't know, rig an election. It will probably be used to justify banning Twitter at some point if it does passes. Probably by August or September, given the timeframe the bill specifies for how long the company has to sell.

Plus if you think the dual citizens who comprise a considerable majority of Congress care about national security when they have zero national loyalty, then I have a bridge to sell you.

Not that I disagree with you, but wasn't it the Senate/House that passed the TikTok ban, not the President?

iirc Trump tried to Presidentially ban TikTok, but this particular ban was voted on.

Well they did anyways lol
But yeah they do already have hardware backdoors and smartfridges to spy on us in every room.
Adversary 24/abr./2024 às 17:23
Also I'd like to point out that this bill started making rounds after Biden got an account on Tiktok and proceeded to get dunked on by the userbase of said social media site. So much like with going after the mayor of New York City the minute he broke rank and complained about the problems with both illegal immigration and homelessness that are rife in that locale on charges he would have otherwise not been rightfully prosecuted for, he or rather his handlers are being petty and vindictive.

The point is, the usa ain't going to be worth living in much longer if you value freedom or the ability to retire or get healthcare

Because they want everything censored like in the cable tv days. But also everything spying on you 24/7 and selling your data.

And all you will own nothing, not be able to afford a family, every group constantly fighting with other groups so no one goes after the 1%, etc.

And I disagree with the notion that Trump should have even tried to do that to begin with. But then again I don't think the government should be permitted to ban anything which isn't explicitly illicit and immoral, like CSAM.

Granted, the FBI has the largest collection of that. Though I do think the FBI should be banned or at least reigned in considerably. I might get my wish once SCOTUS rules on the Chevron defense.
