TikTok to be banned in US
If someone reads this or uses these forums. It's unlikely that they use TikTok. Many people do.

The reason that it's going to be banned is as you may have heard due to the access to so many people's data and it poses a national security risk.

What data? I've no clue really. What I do know is if their reasoning is to protect consumers data, then TikTok isn't the only service or product that should be banned. There's quite a few out there.

Late last year, TikTok was forced to admit that it used this same data to spy on individual Americans, including journalists. Without question, TikTok is a Trojan Horse.

At least 27 states and the federal government have banned the use of the app on government devices. My advice: If you or someone in your family insists on using TikTok, install it on a separate device, like an old smartphone. Don’t connect that device to your home network. Use a cellular connection to get online.

Several states have also banned a few other Chinese-owned apps and platforms. This list includes Weibo, WeChat, and Alibaba.

There's others. Temu, SHEIN, CapCut.

There's also the products.

The FCC banned sales and imports of Huawei devices in November, citing national security concerns.

Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Oppo have faced similar accusations. A recent report found Chinese-made Android phones include “an alarming number” of preinstalled apps that grant dangerous privileges.

There's also drones. The most popular made by DJI

A DJI drone with a thermal-imaging camera is seen in Menlo Park, Calif., March 3, 2019. Chinese-made drones could pose a national security risk to the United States due to laws in China that force companies to provide authorities access to user data, two U.S. agencies say in a new memo.

So there's a lot and I have no clue how far it reaches. China makes 1/3 of the products the US uses and with a law as stated in the DJI quote, it's likely to be something we hear about so much that we get bored about hearing how yet another product is banned in the US.

Think to all China's owned products, services and companies out there. The anti-cheat software. The DRM. The digital distributors. The publishers and devs. Think of all of the games Tencent owns.

It's hard to believe that the US goverment is being tasked with this, regulating technology. Are they going to double down and have a 3rd party that's more efficient handle it for them or are they going to be criticized for being hypocrites? This is so odd to me. And to top it off, say a republican was in office for the next term, they'll be lax on pushing this forward.

Well, US citizens and their government have the Right to make their own decisions, don't they? If they don't like something, they don't have to use it. And, if they disagree with how something they are being sold is or can be used to exploit information and private data, they have the Right to refuse to allow that to be sold or used if they don't agree with that policy, Right?

Or, are you saying that other citizens in other nations do not have the right to refuse access to such data by another government?

If China is concerned about this, they can change their policies. If they don't, then they must not be sufficiently motivated to do that. That is their Right to do or not do within their own laws, too.

If TikTok is sold and no longer subjected to Chinese law requiring government access to user data by default, then there will not be a problem. If it is not, then TikTok will be banned.

Total different story than I heard than official, nowadays they trying to change rule that one person with title president can ban anything they want like Genshin, LoL, Dota 2, Steam and can't be reverted.

Btw kids haven't learned "gaming is luxury" right, a rare phrase would be becoming common phrase there.

Donald Trump is like blame Joe Biden for it, then goes on to even claim America needs to ban Facebook instead! Lulz

I guess he had forgetten the time he was obsessed and raging about TikTok all the time, wanting it banned, when he was the US President... because the TikTok teens trolled him.

it's not about protecting citizens privacy or national security. it's about control and censorship. the US govt wants tiktok banned because it's from a chinese company, which prevents them from more effectively spying on its citizens and from controlling the narrative. they don't want competition in said spying

It's true there's some okay content on TikTok, but there's also a lot of garbage. It doesn't really matter if it stays because youtube shorts exists. For example, there was a TikTok debate about if women really need men. It's basically just Andrew Tate for women on live television.

Another issue:

* TikTok #12 site in the world
* YouTube #2 site in the world
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most-visited_websites

YouTube was afraid of TikTok, it's what drove them to crteate shorts.
Google.com would never have been used without their use of AI and a clean interface

Google had protests in 2018 about project nimbus, they cancelled the deal with Israel
Google had protests in 2024 about project nimbus, they fired all employees that protested

This bill of banning TikTok is oddly bundled with money to Ukraine and Israel.

I don't know if everything I said has meaning. Something just doesn't seem right about having the TikTok ban bundled.

How many users are going to learn about VPN's because of this ban?

I dont know what all these personal information leaking is about, does this mean I am not getting lowest social welfare? because the welfare is redirected into people that knows how to look like they mortgaged their house, than the people actually in need?

there is the saying, help emergency, but not help the poor.

doesn't matter how many clue I get from media, I am still clueless.

You're right.

You know I thought it would be just for government officials, not the entire country, I wasn't in the know. I guess we're lucky what was discovered was publicized. If I imagine 10 years in the future, thinking about future tech.

You have a company with a tons of videos on their servers that has been blocked from anyone viewing those videos. What if it's a loss for them. They could sell all data to the highest bidder. make a tiktok drinking alcohol unresponsibly? guess who wants to know? your car insurance company, health insurance, bank loan and even a future employer. did someone make a tiktok that featured you in the background and they could see your face and lips, with you talking to someone on the phone "I got tested and found I have HIV" then you'd be someone these types of companies I mentioned would pay more for compared to your unresponsible drinker. All those companies have a calculated date of death for you based on a number of factors, they need to know what to charge you for your insurance premiums or if you'll default on your loan or cost the company money. And these 4 types of companies have been doing that before 2018, I can't imagine what's being done today or what'll be possible in 10-30 years from the data they collected. That's probably the worst part, the not knowing part.

China and the US have had so many arguments over commerce. It doesn't make sense to me. Both countries are losing money and slowing the advancement of tech by not working together. For example we're several years behind in solar panel technology due to US passing Tarriffs importing Chinese solar panels and the China following suit about 25 years ago.

They are banning it, because it is successful and they don't control it like the other platforms.
Nothing to do with whatever they are claiming to be the reason - just the fact that they are not able to get a backdoor to spy on you.

Data on where you live, your age, what you do for a living, what you like to buy online, what sites you liked to visit to indicate what your personal likes and dislikes are so you can be manipulated not just by marketers, but by foreign parties looking to gain an advantage in your nation by manipulating you.

Politicians are all hypocrites. It’s always freedom of speech, right to bear arms, etc. only until they think that they can score political points for saying the opposite. Happened with comic books, rock and roll, video games, rap music, etc.

Never guns though. They will ban guns in DC but not schools. Curious how that works.

For example we're several years behind in solar panel technology due to US passing Tarriffs importing Chinese solar panels and the China following suit about 25 years ago.

That's because China was subsidizing and effectively state-funding their solar-panel industry which allowed those companies to sell their products at below-cost rates in order to drive US companies out of business and to secure a near monopoly on the product market... The US had to respond to that.

If you haven't revealed your private data, a company that you do business with or share your most intimate information with has already done it.

That's why it's so difficult to get some kind of baseline privacy protection for US citizens - Privacy is commercialized, not "protected."

But, that lack of response by government or regulation stops when a foreign government becomes involved with gaining access to that data, sometimes in "real-time."

And, to be fair, one must also acknowledge that certain commercial interests in the US are likely very enthusiastic about legislation that seeks to remove or hamper TikTok in order to help promote the growth of their own services that have similar functionality.

I'm sure they will patriotically pat themselves on the back for influencing legislation while they cash the checks being paid to them by shell companies harvesting data for US government agencies...:)

Guns aren't allowed on school grounds in any state unless it is an official police/security officer.

False. Literally look it up. Hell one just allowed teachers and staff to be armed in class, against the wishes of teachers.
