but with a rabbit you also need something for it to chew. And you need fresh bedding/wood shavings etc for it to lay on.

Chickens.
Can feed them pretty much whatever leftovers/ scraps you have, get fresh eggs in return. I could even stop feeding mine and they'll be fine grazing in the yard, just need to make sure they constantly have clean water.
