It's my understanding that a person armed with a rapier, who was trained in it's use and was good at dueling, could kill more people faster than any other close combat weapon until semiautomatic firearms were developed.

It was a long, lightweight sword that had incredible speed. You would be mincemeat unless you were wearing metal armor.

Internet warriors like to say the rapier wasn't that lethal because it lacked the destructive power of larger swords. But it doesn't take much to kill a person. Cut an artery, or pierce the right internal organ, and you're dead. Sure a rapier might make a little hole in a person with a thrust, but so does a bullet. You might have noticed that bullets are incredibly lethal.

The big swords were used to bash armor, or were swung from horseback and needed to withstand a heavy impact without breaking.

While there is no doubt that a proper rapier is a superior melee weapon, it doesn't really make it universally useful. The typical rapier that is mentioned on wikipedia page is slightly over 1 meter long, but the actual rapiers used to be longer to outrange other rapier users. Sometimes even 1.6 meters (crazy, huh?). Because of its length and the fact that it is used with just one hand it tends to strain the fencer's wrist. It's not so much an issue during a life or death situation but it is an issue in everyday life or when practicing. A long straight rapier is difficult to carry around (Italian rapiers were easily 1.3 meters long and that wasn't even the longest). It is difficult to use effectively in a confined space like rooms or trenches. It can't be used for any purposes outside of combat, and actual combat takes the least percentage of a soldier's life. But it can be countered in the field with long spear or pike (which are that much more uncomfortable to carry). So, considering this, is it really your favorite melee weapon or just the most effective one in duels that it was designed for? Not attacking your preferences or anything, just thought that I'd share a few thoughts and read your perspective on them.
