Besides that, music is also a big one. You can be the best game ever made, but if I'm not fond of the music then I won't remember about you past the credits.
Good example of this was touhou. Very fun games to play, but the music may as well be nonexistent with how much of it I remember for anything past th14.
Story is whatever. It's cool to have if it's good, but nothing of value is really lost if it isn't. So I don't really use story as a basis for anything.
Also gameplay, duh. Be fun to play and I'll stick around.
I also like experiencing perspectives from other cultures, or learning something about history in other regions... assassin's creed games obviously aren't historically accurate but the settings are authentic to the time period they try to portray, and it's been a big selling point of the franchise for me, even though I fell off the series around origins
music is a good one mentioned by the above poster, I really love discovering a game's soundtrack as I play through it, which is another reason I'm really into JRPGs, western soundtracks generally tend to be a lot more atmospheric and understated, which isn't my thing
for anime, character or ambiance
As an example for each, I only bought Metal Gear Rising because I knew it had a good soundtrack. Only got Disco Elysium for the captivating art direction.
I watched Jojo for the style, and the Persona 4 Animation for the music.
Some of my favorite pieces of media stole me away based on those two things alone.
The gameplay can be worse.. I can get used to it, if the design allows for it. If the game is designed in a way that I like and enjoy playing. That sounds really vague, but I can't really be any more specific until I mention the game, as each game is different in one way or another. Some elements may be the same, but it's still somewhat different in the end.
I'm not that picky about its gameplay, but more about its character development and story.
The moment one of it is missing, it's no longer that good.. But I might see through it, so I can judge the entire picture instead of just a few minor experiences.
That said, if the story or character development is so bad that I can't keep up.. Then I drop it, I guess. I do have my limits.
Generally speaking, descriptions and the design of the game in combination with the gameplay tells me enough.
If I know, the game isn't of a genre I'm looking for, then I'm not gonna bother. Simple.
But.. If it's the genre I wanna look for, then all I need to have provided is some masterpiece design to convince me to try it out. Then, all of that goes - The gameplay, character design.. All of it gets judged altogether.
If I enjoy the gameplay, I may not care about the character development. That is genre dependable;
If I dislike the gameplay, but am in for the character development because I got interested in the meantime, I will see it through for sure.
.. Yeah.
The music of the game is more or less irrelevant. Sure, it can make things a lot better, but I don't tend to pay it enough attention, unless the story and character development fits it well enough.
Currently playing SMTV and I honestly find it boring as heck. I think it is because the story sucks. and the atmosphere makes zero sense in the end. Gameplay is ok though.
