what grabs you into a game or anime?
prince of persia trilogy, it started easy then got stupid hard later on
too many hazards and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cheap deaths but good games
i dont remember fighting the dark prince at all, just the vizer and he sucked
slow moving object shouldnt hurt but they did, the dude was just a guy, missing in the second game, in the last game hes a god now??? too much back tracking and ♥♥♥♥ but great games

but the adventure, the characters, history and lore really fascinate me, like i want to experience that too, though with far less danger but thats the kinda life we can only dream of. just getting out there and exploring the world, but in reality, thats time consuming, expensive and a lot of trouble

lost civilizations in both reality and fiction, again its really interesting how humans lived and did things many years ago

i could list more but you get the idea, this kind of fiction is peak, its just too good and exciting

Character design is a big thing for me, which is why I pass on a lot of western games and anime. If your main character doesn't make me go "I wish I looked like that", then I don't care to explore further.

Besides that, music is also a big one. You can be the best game ever made, but if I'm not fond of the music then I won't remember about you past the credits.
Good example of this was touhou. Very fun games to play, but the music may as well be nonexistent with how much of it I remember for anything past th14.

Story is whatever. It's cool to have if it's good, but nothing of value is really lost if it isn't. So I don't really use story as a basis for anything.

Also gameplay, duh. Be fun to play and I'll stick around.

I do love the feeling of grand adventures, which is why I enjoy long JRPG hero's journey type games, but also I struggle to find enough time to get through them more and more as I get older...

I also like experiencing perspectives from other cultures, or learning something about history in other regions... assassin's creed games obviously aren't historically accurate but the settings are authentic to the time period they try to portray, and it's been a big selling point of the franchise for me, even though I fell off the series around origins

music is a good one mentioned by the above poster, I really love discovering a game's soundtrack as I play through it, which is another reason I'm really into JRPGs, western soundtracks generally tend to be a lot more atmospheric and understated, which isn't my thing

Enjoyment. Which is dependent on the genre, medium, etc. Heck, even my mood is a factor.
When I notice little details that tell me the author is serious about the narrative, characters, and worldbuilding.

for game, gameplay mostly, after ambiance and character development

for anime, character or ambiance
Art-style and music.

As an example for each, I only bought Metal Gear Rising because I knew it had a good soundtrack. Only got Disco Elysium for the captivating art direction.

I watched Jojo for the style, and the Persona 4 Animation for the music.

Some of my favorite pieces of media stole me away based on those two things alone.
Character design, or design of the game in general is what draws me in at first; Then, based on how much that all appeals to me, I can convince myself to keep going to get through the story even if I don't like it as much as I have expected to.
The gameplay can be worse.. I can get used to it, if the design allows for it. If the game is designed in a way that I like and enjoy playing. That sounds really vague, but I can't really be any more specific until I mention the game, as each game is different in one way or another. Some elements may be the same, but it's still somewhat different in the end.

I'm not that picky about its gameplay, but more about its character development and story.
The moment one of it is missing, it's no longer that good.. But I might see through it, so I can judge the entire picture instead of just a few minor experiences.
That said, if the story or character development is so bad that I can't keep up.. Then I drop it, I guess. I do have my limits.

Generally speaking, descriptions and the design of the game in combination with the gameplay tells me enough.
If I know, the game isn't of a genre I'm looking for, then I'm not gonna bother. Simple.
But.. If it's the genre I wanna look for, then all I need to have provided is some masterpiece design to convince me to try it out. Then, all of that goes - The gameplay, character design.. All of it gets judged altogether.

If I enjoy the gameplay, I may not care about the character development. That is genre dependable;
If I dislike the gameplay, but am in for the character development because I got interested in the meantime, I will see it through for sure.
.. Yeah.
The music of the game is more or less irrelevant. Sure, it can make things a lot better, but I don't tend to pay it enough attention, unless the story and character development fits it well enough.
I need a good story I guess. And major atmosphere. I like games such as Dishonored.

Currently playing SMTV and I honestly find it boring as heck. I think it is because the story sucks. and the atmosphere makes zero sense in the end. Gameplay is ok though.

nocturne has the best atmosphere in that series by far, what I would praise the most in SMTV is the gameplay, it builds well on the previous games for the most part and kept me entertained enough to not get dragged down by the mediocre plot
Nothing really as I’ve basically stopped playing games.
Music, Visuals and being claimed as a cult game/anime/movie.
Interesting setting and world building is probably what matters the most to me
I like realism in gore or milsim, pve co op cause everyones a different experience, that and horror, simple though, I don’t like cheesy things or a lot of emotion
