54% of Americans from ages 16-74 read below a 6th grade reading level.
I don't think I've ever been more ashamed of my country being under 30, without a college education and seeing so many American's whose profession should have them retaining better language and critical thinking skills, but don't.

It's not just that the way we communicate has changed, people are beginning to not be able to decipher simple sentences.

Why do I have to break out so much childish terminology for adults?

Sound bite deep takeaways from a right wing talk radio hosts expose from an anonymous concerned father's pantyclutching over a BLM themed assignment. You can go find the actual assignment if you like. It's bad, but to suggest it is relabeling basic educational goals as racist is willful misdirection.

Basic grammar and arithmetic?
They have gone as far as telling some high school students that the written word is a form of white supremacy.

This is really confusing, because cultures who developed the earliest forms of writing include ancient Sumerians, the Egyptians and the Chinese.

Europeans adopted Arabic numerals because Roman numerals suck.

So how is writing white supremacist?

97.8% of statistics are made up on the spot by lazy people too concerned with driving their opinions into the conversation.

It's a American woke phenomena that makes little sense. *shrug*

I don't see the problem with the level of reading. I could read before school then forgot it then relearned again.

Comics, pirates, stories, witches and wizards, mythologies, ancient cultures, science, history, maths.

So what is the problem ?
If people can read they can choose what they read.

OP and other Americans have any of you sat down and actually read Mark Twain?

Yankee in King Arthur's court not an easy book to get into but highly rewarding it is not some easy adventure of future man goes into history , it shows an intelligent and thoughtful mind.

Makes sense, many times I make simple statements and the other is confused.

I'm so glad that I'm a advanced reader. I pray that we can get our stuff together and stop being so dumb.

Good thing we don´t add sources to claims here on off topic.
94% of steam users never use sources.. (see I can do that as well)

https://www.thenationalliteracyinstitute.com/post/literacy-statistics-2024-2025-where-we-are-now

The problem with these statistics are that they account for English.
around 14% have Spanish as their native. 8% other minor languages and then the rest is English, but even then, those that have English are often biased in some way towards other languages or specific sub groups.

The US are 36th in literacy worldwide (despite being a huge melting pot society without equal access to knowledge) I would say that is high.
These statistics all have different values and amount of people involved in them..

We could also pick this one.

Then its not really low at all.

The vast majority of Americans that can read and write all do it well, then we have a large amount that can´t (for various reasons)
Again. my argument is that the non free knowledge system is what hinders most people (in poor regions even more) access to more than basic read and writing.

But again depending on the spectrum you use and how many you include it can be all from many that can´t to 99% that can.

Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn are both wonderful works. My house was also filled with Homer's Odyssey, Swiss Family Robinson, Jules Verne, Robinson Caruso and other famous works. All of these were read in our early school years. Elementary School we called it here in the states. Now, phones and social media has replaced literature and of course the Social Justice Warriors (woke) labeling anyone they can as racist, homophobes, misogynists and bigots. We just referred to it as reading, writing and arithmetic.

I've got a book full of Twain Essays. Quite interesting that he had so many of them memorized as well. My favorite books growing up were from a fantasty series called Dragonlance, and another called Shannara series. My parents used to take me to flea markets and huge antique markets. I would always gravitate to the old dusty walls of fantasy and sci-fi. Later in life I'd sit in the back isle of Waldenbooks just engrossed with my surroundings like asmr before asmr. The book smell. The art everywhere. So many worlds to disappear into. Reading was a major outlet and escape growing up, and as I got older it made a massive difference in my opportunities. Typed fast, headed into church. Cheers.

Again, ironically, if you read the post, nobody is talking about how the US compares to other countries for literacy in general- they're talking about reading levels, you goober.

I've never understood people who have poor reading comprehension skills.

How can you read something then not understand what you just read?
