too much resource in graphism and not enough in gameplay, character development and good story
open world is trap, if you dont know how to use your open world it will become a pain in the as
seem writer turn into zombie mode like hollywood writter, they lack of good imagination and creativity
some franchise become too old and company are unable to pass to something else, example halo and gears of war should stopped at halo reach and gear of war 3, you will answer super mario, but nintendo doesnt force themselve than super mario is sequel to an old mario
and for assassin creed well you ask ubisoft they suck to made good japaneze video game, compare with yakuza ishin, alway give japaneze responsability to made good japaneze game, never ask ubisoft or electronic art they are unable to do this job, so sega=good japanese game, ubisoft=they going to ruin japanese game
Timed events, microtransactions, premium skins, XP boosters.
I used to enjoy Ubisoft games and while it's common to rage on them, Japanese companies have started focusing on such tactics too but they aren't at the extent of their Western counterparts yet.
Ubisoft dreams of selling a bare bones package.
They could do something really social with Assassin's Creed Infinity and make it a hitman style game but I'm guessing it will be a bare bones HUB where every new location is an expansion to buy.

it's not necessarily AAA. i mean look at asian market for a while. real ♥♥♥♥.
This in turn loses them money, so they become even more timid about trying anything new, and they double down even harder on pandering to people who would never buy their game.
Rinse and repeat until bankruptcy.
You hit the nail on the head.
Genshin Impact = Chinese
Elden Ring = Japanese
etc.
The only real except is BG3, and they pretty much rejected everything other western companies are doing, and they even called those other companies out on it. They are the exception that proves the rule.
The answer? Greedy corporations. Not all of them but a lot of them now. All money no passion
