If you put some 300W card in there then you can expect the fireworks.
They last even longer now if you over spec and the thing has hybrid fan mode so it doesn't use the fan during idle.
Seasonic has been a good brand for a long long time.
Sometimes it can damage motherboard or GPU as well when it blows. Heard plenty of cases where motherboard was fried too and had to be replaced.
thus.. unless you reused the case.. you would not reuse the psu.. still NON of those now 40 year old psu's stopped working..
but that has not been an issue since like the late 90s.. when psu's no longer came with the case and instead had a standardised size to fit in all cases.... those can basicly used forever
as for lacking the right connectors on your ancient psu.. thats why you have converter cables.. so even that is not an issue..
psu's basicly never die...
so.. it is other reasons why one replaces an psu..
main one is : when your current psu no longer has the wattage needed.
second one is : efficiency.. never psu's have generally higher power efficiency.. a 500w psu of 20 years ago without any lable.. will likely have 20% loss.. meaning while it draws 500w.. it can only deliver like 400w...
idle power of modern psu is also a lot better..
now electricity is so costly... and a psu cheap... why would you NOT replace it for a better model.
third one is : price
yes those adapter cables excist.. but they cost money too.. so why not save yourself that cost and get an psu that already has those connections
fourth one is : safety... and care for your other components.. an psu won't die.. but not all psu are made the same.. some deliver 12v as 11.99999v-12.00001v and never go above those margins... for old bad ones it can be as much as 11.4 to 12.6v (or 5%) those larger margins will make your system less stable.. making overclock potential not as high... and will put more strain on your components that than will break after less years of use..
finally is looks... adapter cables.. and such aint the most pretty look.. if you already had a sleeved psu from like a decade ago you are golden.. but not all had that..
if you have like an corsair 1200i or 1500i.. from a decade ago thats still fine..
but if you had a crappy non modulair 700w supply in your old system.. you might in this age of cases with windows shell out a bit for a nicer looking onbe.
