wow a psu can last a long time huh?
i have a raidmax hybrid 2 rx-730ss that was gifted to me with my pc case. i had no idea it was a horrible psu but it lasted for a solid 4 years or so for a psu that came out in 2011 i think thats pretty good.

wonder how long everyone elses psu are lasting them?

i know its going bad since my pc randomly restarts but hey it should not be working at all tbh since its so old.

Honestly, if you're PSUs are dying quickly, you're buying bad PSUs.
my psu is bad, its known as the worst rated one xd. i was just waiting for it to go bad to switch it.

It really depends how much load you put them under. If you have some low power consumption card on 700W rubbish PSU then it can easily last.
If you put some 300W card in there then you can expect the fireworks.

it can depend on how heavy and frequency it is used. like most electronics

Also decent quality PSU can easily last a decade even under the heavy use so 4 years is not that much of a big deal unless the PSU is bottom of the barrel.

I just buy oem now but yes when I did build PCs some psu's would basically last forever, but psu's will degrade over time and most people aren't running them at their limit so it maybe closer to popping than you know.

They last even longer now if you over spec and the thing has hybrid fan mode so it doesn't use the fan during idle.

Seasonic has been a good brand for a long long time.

Swap to something decent like Corsair RMe (2023) series, SeaSonic Focus GX series or beQuiet Pure Power 12M series before it takes half the rig with it when it goes.
Mines lasted about 3 million years. im still going strong,.

why would it take out my rig as well, i heard only a psu dies it just dies and never turns on till you place it?

Sometimes it can damage motherboard or GPU as well when it blows. Heard plenty of cases where motherboard was fried too and had to be replaced.

in the olden days psu came with the case and were of non standard size.
thus.. unless you reused the case.. you would not reuse the psu.. still NON of those now 40 year old psu's stopped working..

but that has not been an issue since like the late 90s.. when psu's no longer came with the case and instead had a standardised size to fit in all cases.... those can basicly used forever

as for lacking the right connectors on your ancient psu.. thats why you have converter cables.. so even that is not an issue..

psu's basicly never die...
so.. it is other reasons why one replaces an psu..
main one is : when your current psu no longer has the wattage needed.

second one is : efficiency.. never psu's have generally higher power efficiency.. a 500w psu of 20 years ago without any lable.. will likely have 20% loss.. meaning while it draws 500w.. it can only deliver like 400w...
idle power of modern psu is also a lot better..
now electricity is so costly... and a psu cheap... why would you NOT replace it for a better model.

third one is : price
yes those adapter cables excist.. but they cost money too.. so why not save yourself that cost and get an psu that already has those connections

fourth one is : safety... and care for your other components.. an psu won't die.. but not all psu are made the same.. some deliver 12v as 11.99999v-12.00001v and never go above those margins... for old bad ones it can be as much as 11.4 to 12.6v (or 5%) those larger margins will make your system less stable.. making overclock potential not as high... and will put more strain on your components that than will break after less years of use..

finally is looks... adapter cables.. and such aint the most pretty look.. if you already had a sleeved psu from like a decade ago you are golden.. but not all had that..
if you have like an corsair 1200i or 1500i.. from a decade ago thats still fine..

but if you had a crappy non modulair 700w supply in your old system.. you might in this age of cases with windows shell out a bit for a nicer looking onbe.

Going cheap on PSU for a system is a bad investement.
not the own who did it, but its crazy someone actually bought this psu for some reason. idk who bought it but its crazy i have it and never bothered to get it till this year when my pc was black screening and i upgraded everything else too.
