Typical manufactured outrage.
"Nothing to see here folks move on," in play out of "gaming" journalism script follow up along the line of "was here", "its not it" and other mental gymnastic of apologists.
There's probably a genuine discussion to be had regarding DEI in this and other games, but for example every single Youtube video about changes to the Silent Hill 2 remake features a heavily edited image of Angela to make her look fatter than she will actually look in the game.
Does she look exactly like she did in the original? No, but she doesn't have the double chin that the outrage-bait edits suggest, and she doesn't look like David Duchovny either.
Another character people are freaking out about is Maria, and as far as I can tell the biggest change is having removed the leopard print of her skirt.
What happened is Konami used the dreaded "modern audiences" phrase in a tweet, and now the vehemently anti-DEI crowd are desperately looking for signs of wokeness, combing every screenshot and every frame of every video for anything that could be remotely considered woke. Then they use their findings, sometimes tuned up for enhanced outrage as outrage clickbait for views and clout.
That's not to say that there are not any changes being made for the worse here, possibly well meaning but largely unwanted changes in the name of diversity, equity and inclusion. I think there's a genuine discussion to be had there, but it's more nuanced than the outrage artists would have you believe and ultimately people will vote with their wallets anyway. A whole cottage industry around making people angry has sprang up around this stuff and it's hurting real conversations.
There is nothing wrong with it.
I do. All this "zomg woke" idiocy is outrage-streamer, manufactured clickbait, marketed to the gamergate/MRA cultists who've been panicking for the last decade that white males are only the focus of 80% of everything now instead of 95%.
Gotta come up with a new panic every year, to keep the fear bubbling along. Gamergate, to "SJW", to "woke", to "DEI", to "Sweet Baby". . . gotta keep those clicks coming, the streamers & influencers need to keep up the payments on their new condo & hot rod.
