But it would be nice if gay men at the parades would at least put on some shorts.
I completely understand that. But how it was explained recently is that part of the gay culture is its grittiness. It used to be underground because it had to be, so it has always had that grit attached along with it, attached to the culture itself. Some gays identify with that. Not every gay person subscribes to it but it is a part of queer culture, remembering their roots and all that. It's kind of a big "♥♥♥♥ you" to homphobics, patriarchial ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, etc..

It confuses though when people think pride events will be family-friendly. It would be nice to have events that celebrate queer culture that are PG or rated G for queer children to celebrate with too but afaik, pride events, at least here, are more daytime-friendly, nighttime-naughty.

Doesn't bother me personally. Genitals are a part of nature, but unless it's wanted, it's like "okay man, put that thing away please." I'm comfortable in my own skin, but I still wouldn't be walking around with a ♥♥♥♥ ring around my junk just because other people are doing the same. That kind of stuff, at least to me, is reserved for sexy time with a significant other.

Time and place for everything. If it's agreed upon to happen at a certain place, more power to them, just be safe about it.

All the haters crawling out from the woodwork into this thread aptly demonstrates why you still need events like that.

I am GAY. Let me wave my Peen at you all for a solid month and consistently remind you where I put it.

I am STRAIGHT. Let me continue on with my life.

Having a sexual orientation or drive is not an accomplishment.

and yes, what happened to gays in the past is reprehensible, but being a sexual minority that is no longer marginalized (if anything it is catered too) does not mean that the majority want to be inundated by it for a solid month by every corporation trying to make a dime off it.

Would you say the same thing about Black History Month?

Looks like you need some cheering up.

Happy Pride Month!!!!

Happy Pride Month!

I'm quite cheerful even if you can't see it.

Oh definitely. And for people who have been assaulted by such genitals, forget it. Incredibly insensitive to say the least.

I just thought I'd chime in b/c it's something I recently heard and it did make sense. That doesn't meant I'm loving it or would make choices that would allow for me to view such things, but I do understand that people can be different and have faced things I haven't and so have different attitudes.

I can't imagine how it would feel for someone who has been... violated, seeing the same thing they were violated with at a parade they attended to try and have a good time.

Different strokes for different folks, sometimes literally. You're allowed to have any opinion you want. Some might just take it too hard and attack you over it. Not me. Too old for that.

I'm not a hater. I don't care what people do. I just believe if you're born that way it's not something to be proud or ashamed of. It'd be like someone being proud of anything that was not by choice.

But hey, if people want to be proud, I'm not stopping them.

If people are born LGBTQ how can they be proud of something they have no control over? Isn't pride about an accomplishment?
no? I for one am pretty proud of being good looking. a lot of people aren't. i got lucky. i got borned just right.

it's really annoying that i keep going to pride events where everyone is fully clothed, and everyone else apparently goes to folsom street fair instead. can we trade?

the month isn't to celebrate them being born, it's to celebrate them no longer being victims of oppression and discrimination/prejudice, just like how we have womens history in march.

at least for the most part, I won't deny that some people are still treat them badly, but not like before.

I don't see anything wrong with devoting a month to celebrate that.

Part of the problem people have with it, at least in Canada, is having an entire month devoted to pride when Canada Day, the birth of the country, is only given a day. It comes off as pride being more important and having more impact than the establishment of a country.

Could we kindly have a parade where all the participants are tastefully wearing a full set of clothes, or have I somehow missed the part where public indecency has somehow been decriminalized?

It doesn't apply to pride by default.

Companies like the ones that change their Twitter pic in June to have an array of colors?

What about Women's history month and black history month?
Is a month also too long?

I actually agree a day is too short to celebrate the founding of a country, those should be at least a week long to be honest.. I don't know about a month, because a country is not a person.

Celebrating the creation of a country is great and all , but not sure if it's on the same level as celebrating equal rights & freedom from oppression/etc.

Considering how long black history has been around, a month might not be long enough. Black history is American history.

It's a slippery slope. If you say yes, then people who agree rejoice, but if you say no, the other side gets their undies stuck in a bunch and starts waving torches. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
