A very common saying. But what do you think of it?

I think it's correct in some situations, but really, if you can't take your title seriously as an author in an age where several people can be involved in such project, why should the audience?

If it looks stupid, I can't help but think it will probably be stupid.

A cover can say a lot of it's genuine. A cover shows care and taste (or not) regardless of the contents. With a book, I would not only rely on the cover but also on the blurb, the table of contents and reviews, and I would also try out the book in various passages.

And rather accurately, considering most like to keep up appearances, at odds with their true nature.

It just means don't project your preconceived notions onto... what ever the topic/object in question is.

You might end up making an easily avoidable mistake, it'll be your loss, not theirs. Even experts in their field make mistakes, so its kind of a statement to:

Keep an open mind and don't get lazy/sloppy with your judging.

It has more to do with not being shallow and getting to know a person. Sadly the age of social media and dating apps has warped the standards of a lot of people.

I'm a firm believer in "when people show you who they are, believe them."

Don't believe in "what could be." See what is and make your decisions accordingly.

I'm going through bits of my journal and it's so crazy how the answers can be RIGHT THERE and yet, still missed. It's always right there. The truth never needs to hide.

It has more to do with not being shallow and getting to know a person. Sadly the age of social media and dating apps has warped the standards of a lot of people.

I think that it's probably used more for that in this day and age, but because the quote encompasses many different things, it can be used for those things as well.

I myself grew up listening to my teacher say that to me when it came to books.

Considering it's original clearly come from books, it's baffling to see someone say it has nothing to do with books. It's not just used for people, although it definitely can be.

I've never heard it apply to anything else in reality. Although yes it can if we try hard enough.

When someone opens up to you, REALLY opens up, and you for some reason (not you, just in general) don't take them seriously, there's a good chance you've just lost them - maybe not right away, but over time.

Sometimes the most obvious answer is the one we overthink and never believe is the truth.
