I can't really think of anything even in the same league. Maybe Akira or Porco Rosso or The Castle of Cagliostro.
That show was amazing! Honestly, it was probably better than my original favorite - Gundam: 08th MS Team. But it's hard to forget original favorites, and 08th MS team is still mine for the impact it had on my life.
Did I learn that war was bad as the show's theme intends? No. I learned that mechs are awesome, however impractical they may be,that war is awesome, and that Zeon are the good guys. How? I dunno; same way that the Brotherhood of Nod are the good guys, presumably. They're just cooler. Why? I dunno. Better mechs? You try arguing with 18-year-old me. I quit arguing with him a long time ago. That kid is impossibly stubborn. It's a wonder his parents ever put up with him.
