your hypothetical does not reflect the state of wages, nor how inflation happens.
You couldn't pay me to go to California anymore. I used to go there when I was a kid. Not anymore.
It would require the whole governmental system in the state to get an enema before I would ever consider it again. Sadly to say I'm not even sure an enema would help.
(You have to say now: "Yes, it is." And i would say: "No, it´s not." And then You would say that i´m ridiculous to make my point like this. And i would say: "No U". Then You would say: "Liar." and i would say: "You´re dumb." to which You would reply: "You´re dumber." and i would say: "You´re the dumbest." and then You would say: "You´re so dumb, that i can´t even tell how dumb You are." and i would ask if insults would solve problems, and You would say that i have started, and i would say that this isn´t true...)
Wages would have to rise to $50 to meet minimum wage rates. But people with skills will want at least $60, $70, $80 or more for their labour.
And people who write checks won't be able to afford that. If you're making double minimum wage now, and minimum wage goes up higher to what you're currently earning, you're back to minimum wage again, and with the costs of living that are going to go with that. That's one way to keep a population poor and under control I guess.
I had been stationed in SoCal many years ago and after a return trip to SoCal for a shutdown at a refinery, I didn't see a change. Air pollution was just as bad as it was when I was stationed there, yet with CARB leading the way, one would think the air would be cleaner. I have no intention of going back there for anything.
If it turns out that salaries are driven into the ground, then step back and evaluate why you're trying to compete in that area. It is in the individual's interest to adapt. But if someone truly wants to work a particular job for 2 peanuts an hour, let them.
This will only become more relevant as more services become automated, restricting the availability of certain jobs.
