Similar games to Runescape?
Anything up and coming that does a good 'take' on same style of mmo as runescape? But without people's sexual preferences being the focal point of every event and the community in general, to an absurd extent out of context with the original game itself? Or is it too much to ask today.

I've done the whole 'similar to runescape' search routine, fairly disappointing results mostly clickbait type listings, and old non-maintained stuff etc.

I'm not aware of any MMO which isn't mostly populated by perverts, weirdos and weebs.

Ultima Online is still active. There are "free" shards too. Ultima Online Outlands being a pretty popular one.

I play on the official servers on Chesapeake. Atlantic is the most populated official server.

Official Servers are still charging around $15 USD per month though despite being a MMO from the 90s. It's got some hidden "Pay to Win" things as well. It's not obvious at first, but for crafting there are things that guarantee success and drop rates in the game are super low because there are third party cash shops.

The team managing it hasn't pulled their head from their ass and still thinks the way you combat third party sellers is by making the drop rates low. All that does is keep people who play the game honestly have to grind more.

But other than that, the game is actually pretty fun and the skill system is still one of the more unique ones. You'll of course be driven into making either a Animal Tamer or Samurai Vampire build because those are pretty much the only ones able to do content...

I'm making it sound bad, but it really is fun for a while.

Everybody's nuts nowdays thats fine I'm nuts too, its the forced feeding of ideologies and things out of proportion to the purpose of the game. Why can't adults run things, anywhere, anymore? How would they like it if I had an awesome game, spacemining or something, but every ingame event, every advertising, splash screen, loot reward was MAGA stuff? That would be inconsiderate and immature no matter my private feelings.

Well, they ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ deserve it. The players and developers that still play the game enable it to happen at this point.

It's still a fun game for a time.

Honestly, I’ve yet to see a true copy-cat for RuneScape. It’s just such a distinct style of game that doesn’t really fit into just one genre. Some parts are like other MMOs, but then other parts make more in line with life sim games such as Stardew Valley. It’s also largely a sandbox, and even draws some loose ideas from survival games.

I think that’s why so many people migrate from one version of the game to other whenever they get burned out. It’s more common to see a RuneScape 3 player try out Old School, or vice versa, than it is to see people go from RS to other MMOs.
What about Crosscode? It's a single player game, set in an MMO.

CrossCode’s great, and well worth a play. But certainly not anything like RuneScape in its style.

Not quite what I had in mind genre-wise, but a really cool looking game I never knew existed thanks. Steam shows about 50 games over and over and over again browsing its always following up on something someone mentions that I find the next 100 hour game binge.

Never played it myself, but Path of Exile always had a Runescape look to me.
If you're looking for a game in the style of OSRS, but where the skills have an extra twist with the addition of tamable pocket companions, then Remote Realms is for you.
