Lumen flashlight for self-defence

How many lumen do I need if I want to blind a home-thief for 30 seconds at least? I don't want to make him/her blind for the rest of their life. I live in Denmark and we are not even allowed to use pepperspray as self-defence in our own home.

A strobing bike light would work pretty well. You know, the ones which are really dangerous to put on your bike because they blind drivers.

Or you know, just google "brightest torch" and buy one of those. Or just get a huge Maglite and bash people with it.

Harry The Gamer: Another idea. A small fire extinguisher. The Aerosol cans. You can keep several around the home. That should muck them up for a while. Had this idea with someone that could not keep any kind of weapon in their car.

potato: About 300 lumens are required for self-defense flashlights to briefly blind an assailant. Anything beyond 300 will accomplish the job faster, but 300 is usually enough to blind them long enough for you to flee or at least put some distance between you and them.

SMIFFY: I have a 500 lumen bike light in front of me, it'll do the job.

No pepper spray, eh? That stuff is pretty brutal but I wonder if you'd get in trouble for using the strobe setting on a flashlight. That's the best way to disorient someone with light, but they might go into a seizure.
Personally I'd knock em out with the flashlight :D

If light power is a problem, a simple flickering flashlight would do the trick to disorient people. They use this method in government agencies and military. As a self defence device, this is probably a lot more versatile as it's a compact item and can be carried anywhere.

What exactly do you mean with flickering? I've looked at a flickering light many times. Yes, it was annoying, but I wouldn't say that I was disoriented.

The idea is that if you turn lights off, it will take a while for eyes to adjust hence blinding them of their surroundings. However I've realised most strobe flashlights are illegal in many countries anyway.

I use a 1500 lumen flashlight made by Energizer to perform inspections in dark areas at distances over 20 feet (looking at bolts). This would do the job for you.
