Just a few days away!
Just use The Force Engine.
The big news is that it's being re-released for all the other consoles, so now Playstation, Switch, etc, will get their releases.
AFAIK, there's no shared cross-platform compatibility, but consoles in their own line will have it.
It will also have XL, Campaign, and CONQUEST mode. (ie: Big multi and all the single-player fun.)
It's absolutely one (SWTB2) of the BEST GAMES EVER. I keep it installed on any gaming PC I own, always, right beside other games like Diablo 2, Civ IV, Medieveal TW 2, etc.
The Remaster will have upressed graphics, the DLC from the Xbox Version, rewritten Netcode, and the UI from the console versions.
Is it worth it on PC?
I wouldn't say so, but I think its more for the casual Star Wars fan who doesnt wanna go through the headaches of modding the game to make it playable.
On the other hand they put Kit Fisto in the game
on the other hand: every script kiddy in the continent will be instantly cheating. i'm not excited for that.
But for Tomb Raider 1-3 Remaster, I plan on buying it on GOG.

Edit: In regards to Steam Deck & controller support found this:

Edit 2: In UI case, just 2 mods from the looks of it and should be mostly done.

The old version is fine.
It's "old," so yeah, you do have to wrangle it a bit to get it to run well on more modern PCs. (Sound is a big issue, too, that used to cause issues for peeps.)
But, the gameplay is fun, the campaign is excellent, and the really unique strategic Conquest mode is pretty awesome. And, all the music is spot-on for Star Wars flavoring.
I agree on the hardware shortcomings, though. I've never played it with a controller. But, for the rest, it's a "good game." It runs smoothly and has very low requirements while still having decent graphics for a game that old. (Mods can help a little there, too.)
Modding - Yes, modding really opens it up. If you add that huge map-pack, it makes instant-action a huge smorgasbord of fun.
There are problems at the "community" level, though - The massive support for all mods and community stuff is basically gone for that older version. Hosts have died, forums removed, and lots of great resources disappeared over the years.
But, all this is just about the old version, not the new one. I won't buy this version on Steam (already own the old one) but I may buy this new one on console. Being able to jump into a match-play map with even just bots is a lot of fun.
I really only got the PC version for the mods anyways. I've estimated I've logged over 20 thousand hours on the console versions (PS2 specifically, but add in Xbox and Xbox Series S)
The funny thing is though, if they did make this an update for the original, fans would riot, as this is a complete overhaul remaster. It would pretty much break every mod.
Hell, they already did this. They put out patch 130 years back, and it was so unpopular they reverted it.
Exactly!
I keep it installed on my gaming PCs. I love jumping in and just blasting bots in cool maps as a relaxing little fun time. :)
The game is really well produced, considering it features single/multiplayer match play on planets or in space, a truly full campaign, and a great strategic-level single/multiplayer game mode PLUS all the moddable features, game-server hosting, etc...
If more FPS/Third-Person games were like this... Well, they're not, so...
"Star Wars: Empire at War" is also another well-produced game. IMO, it's one of the best RTS games ever released and it, too, has multiple modes of play, with single campaign, multiplayer maps, and strategic play, all in both land and space.
If there is one criticism I have of SWBFII it's that space-combat maps in singleplayer need some more work and mechanics. Bomber runs are unfun and matches are pretty tedious in that respect, even if it's fun flying all the ships. Boarding maps and mechanics need work, too. ("need work" as in mods as I don't expect them to do more work on it. :))
