Who here has heard of WipEout?
I feel like a boomer for saying this but back in the older days, there was a PlayStation franchise called WipEout. It's an anti gravity racing game and made up a significant portion of my childhood. The company that developed it was shut down shortly after WipEout 2048 dropped for the PS Vita and nothing has been heard from Sony about a possible new game for PS5. They remastered some of the newer games for the PS4, but no original campaign has been made in 12 years. Is this because everyone moved on from WipEout or is it just Sony neglecting yet another loyal community of people?

A little surprised by the low-key responses, maybe it was more significant in the UK than elsewhere?

Here it was the game that made Playstation a household name, a year before Final Fantasy 7 - its techno soundtrack track was intentionally aimed at the young adults spilling out of nightclubs/raves at 2am, still too wired to sleep and looking for something to wind down to. Essentially changing the idea/culture that games/consoles were for 'kids'.

I am one of the guys who knows wipEout. In fact, I played every game in the series, with wipEout Pure being my first experience when I used to have a PSP back in my youth in Poland.

yes. long term 33/99 politicians involved survived with their careers intact and several elders lost controlling influence over it. in particular it dramatically harmed english/chinese vampire relations, an already extremely precarious relationship.

One of my favorite games ever. I would love to get a new wipeout game. I think the company was something like psychnosis? I dunno. That destruction derby game was bangin too. Maybe that was the company that made DD and I am mixing them up.

the videogame series was killed by sony in retaliation for supporting the dreamcast launch.

it was re-released on n64 as a form of sony throwing nintendo a bone from one of the rivals they murdered.

journalists were so upset about this and covered it so thoroughly that sony canned the property as a whole to spite them. it was also the beginning of the bots systematically dismantling games journalism as anything but a marketing outlet.
