Resident Evil was one of the first real 3d action games and "playable movies." It's influence on gaming can't be understated.

Kojima wanted to do playable movies, but was stuck with the limitations of the MSX, so he had to improvise.

The Playstation hardware allowed people to do what he couldn't.

I mean, there were true 3D games (Descent, Quake) and Kojima-esque story-rich cinematic games (Metal Gear 1 and 2, Marathon, Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Snatcher, Policenauts, Clock Tower, etc.), but Resident Evil was one of the first to do both, beating Metal Gear Solid by a couple years.
