Is Serious Sam the first horde shooter (FPS) game?
I don't think there was another game back then with the same amount of enemies rushing towards the player when it came out. Sure, Doom had some areas with many baddies but not as many as in Serious Sam. It seems like it doesn't get credit for that. At some point people started saying that " Gears of War " was the first horde shooter if I remember correctly which isn't true.

Definitely not. In my opinion most aspects of GoW is very much generic.

Serious Sam was an arena shooter (same genre as Quake and Unreal).
In horde shooter, first popular game was L4D; first at all was Flesh Feast from 1998.

if you want to get really technical, a lot of these horde games get inspiration from Smash TV (1990)

...which plays like Robotron 2084 (1982)

I think you've sort of got an issue that you're thinking "Horde shooter" means a lot of enemies, and not that it's a specific kind of game with waves of enemies that are spawned in periodically.

I can tell you've never played the first Serious Sam game, you should try it.

If you play L4D or any other horde shooter, then go back to the first Serious Sam game you will notice the similarities. Some people liked to speedrun a lot of sections because it was too much. Never heard of Flesh Feast, may wanna look that up.

Do horde mods for Duke Nukem 3D count or are we specifically going for a game with horde mode?

When it first came out and I first tried it, I think I screamed lots of swear words.

I think probably the first thing out of my mouth started with "WHAT THE...." :steamhappy:

Nobody had ever done anything like that before.

I know. Horde shooters evolved from arena shooters and over time beat them in terms of popularity.
