why is manga so expensive
I don't really read manga, I always saw it as a sort of anime super nerd thing, but I want to try to get into Berserk cause I saw the anime and it was really cool and I heard the books were really famous.

Apparently pretty much all famous anime have a ton of books, and Berserk has over 40 volumes and it costs like $700 how am I supposed to spend that much money just to read a story

You dont have to get all 40 in one purchase dude... literally buy a few volumes and take your sweet time reading an intense story such as Berserk. Then just treat yourself with a few more volumes every month. If you cannot afford to spend $700 in the span of a couple months you can always just read any manga online for free.
printing and shipping. only the hardcover is that expensive. the paperback is always cheaper. but this series doesnt have paperback options so just read it online instead. why wasting money on things that you are not sure

try your library interlibrary loan, u can get most any book for free for a month
Because it's expensive to get licences of popular animes.

If you really like the story, consider reading WN because WNs are the author's original story ideas. LNs on the other hand have been edited/restricted by publishers.

A perfect example is the Shield Bro's WN vs LN.

The WN was dark. . . . like really dark. The LN was sanitized for consumption of the masses.

WN > LN > Manga > Anime > Live Adaptation

In that order for story.

if you read japanase language, it cost around 660 yen (maybe 4 dollar) for one chapter

I can confirm that officially translated manga are often better than pirate fanlations/scanlations.

With exceptions. Hats off to these lads for using the original texts when possible and maintaining the original meter. https://mangapanda.onl/chapter/dante-s-divine-comedy/chapter-1
I believe all of Berserk is on Hoopla. All you need is a library card.
If you're lucky enough, some bookstores might have it in 'used/old books' section, and you could grab it real cheap. Gotta be real lucky.
This is why I buy the Hugh Mungus mangas. I got the Naruto Manga that is like…. 1/4 the series from 1 book. But the book is thick as fudge.
$10 per volume doesn't seem too expensive tbh
I am going back to my manga pfp that you all hate...

If you want I can give you sites where you can read them for free.
40 volumes? Is it really that much? Is it the anime that is slow to crawl or the manga? It appeared to me that anime keep repeating the same sequence over the years, remaking it whatnot.

there's approximately 12 publishing staff involved per individual artist, and usually another 2 or 3 per collaborator.

that's a lot of overhead to take care of before the ceo even starts to figure out how to make his nut.
The original series was worth watching, the movie was sadly just a small part of the series, I've watched berserk in its entirety and I was never happy with how it ended
