Why is PC gaming so misogynistic?

I was watching a video about PC gaming, and how sexist attitudes are common. Why is this so common in PC gaming?

It seems like a lot of women feel they have to mute constantly because the atmosphere is so underlying sexist.

I think there's a lot more going on than just PC gaming being misogynistic. Seems far too simplified.

Depends what games you play, the folks you game with, where they are from, etc. Many things can have a significant effect on one's experience.

I have been occasionally playing games online since the early 2000's and I can say confidently from my own experiences that though online gaming has often been toxic, it has rarely been about targeting females. I have seen way more racism than I have misogyny, and way more general toxicity aimed at anyone than either category or both combined.

TL;DR: Your experience depends on a lot of factors, but for the most part, gamers are often just toxic in general.

Because PC gaming culture has traditionally had elements of toxic masculinity linked to it. Only recently it has become more inclusive and diverse. Although women are still far too often being harassed and mistreated by men. Especially when there are screens and some anonymity.

There is a lot of work to be done to make the space safe for everyone.

I think you are right and it's pretty remarkable considering that there seem to be a lot of male players who want more female players, then just treat them badly when they find some.

its a space that is dominated by men, and sometimes very lonely men.

i think the bigger and more pressing question should be, when did we become so weak?
why do we go on a tantrum for some random jerk on the internet?

i never quite understood it, why give us a block button but also a report button?
with just the block button, the problem goes away, theres no need to pursue further action.
