I mean, I'm not a plant scientist I've just learned a few things. Depends on what you are growing. Different plants can utilize/tolerate different conditions and will evolve with their environment. As a general rule I would only ever put in what the plant will use, but if your soil is very sandy you can over water it and over feed it, allowing the plant to consume all the nutrients it can before being flushed until next feeding. In this case, soil PH is way more important than what kind of feed you have.
