Why do US southerners have such a bad reputation?
I've been wondering about this. I'm Canadian, but I've been to the US more than once, and I've also had the pleasure of going to the Deep South. In my experience, most of the people I met in the US south are some of the kindest, most genuine, and most real people. White, Black, Hispanic, it doesn't matter either, it isn't a race thing either. All of them were very hospitable, and well spoken too. It's my second favourite place only after Maine (which is mainly because it reminds me of where I live in Canada).

I'd love to hear what the Americans here think about the southern US in general.

Depends. What reputation?
The stereotype seems to be the opposite of what I described, mostly that a lot of them are racist and uneducated.

The stereotype is true. I live in North Carolina, and the people are racist and uneducated, the issue is only present when you live in rural areas though, you gotta go to the backwoods of a southern state to find out how it really is. Like in Charlotte and Raleigh (the two biggest cities in NC) you probably ain't gonna find any people like that... maybe.

A serious lack of knowledge of American History... Birth of the Nation was made after the founding of the KKK.

The KKK was dead by the time the movie came out, trollboy, and were resurrected by Birth of a Nation. A nutjob wrote a book reminiscing about old times, then Hollywood did the adaptation, along with all the images of people in hoods and holding crosses. That movie not only resurrected the Klan but other groups, which is why there was a campaign to block Gone with the Wind from being made. Everyone saw it as another Birth of a Nation that was going to inspire more groups like the Klan.

I can tell you're one of these Gumps who thinks they're smarter than the average bear for looking stuff up. You're probably one of those type of people who says dumb crap like, "I don't know why people get mad over the swastika. It's an ancient Buddhist symbol," or, "The Nazis weren't really all that antisemitic because Spain killed a bunch of Jews during the Inquisition." Very junior high school level of intelligence that confuses knowing bits and pieces of information for knowing about complex topics.

then you do not know me very well at all.

your response is overtly hostile so there is little reason to continue.

You get what you put out, and I'm only going by what you've posted. Don't blame me if you're coming across as what we used to call a smart aleck/Know It All. You apparently didn't know that the KKK was a relic by the time Birth of a Nation had come out and was forgotten until someone wrote the book on which the movie was based and reinvented them as these Christian foot soldiers in white robes.

Where are you from, BTW? I noticed a lot of "Americans" who like correcting us aren't from here. Don't answer this question because I think I already know the answer.

I am not interested in conflict.
There is little use in conversing at this time.

I would ignore that thing. That thing has been lurking in the forums for the past 12 hours insulting people.

They do have bad reputation because self-centered views tend to be quite common among US southerners.

For sure, they may be kind and friendly to their families. Not a bad thing - that's a very common trait of being a human. However, as soon as it's something that doesn't directly affect their family, they tend to be more isolationist in their overall thinking, they have that "not my problem" attitude, and they tend to follow and support very self-centered autocrats like Donald Trump.

It often feels as though the people who are not from south have more comprehensive understanding of what America is about from a wider point of view. Like for instance, by isolating itself, US would miss out on opportunities for much needed economic growth, collaboration on global challenges, and the ability to shape international norms and institutions.
It would benefit main adversaries like China, which engage heavily on global affairs.

Nothing more than self centered globalist babble as the atomized individual only cares about vague abstractions, like a psychopath which is why they are so readily cheerleaders of wars.

They really just care about no one, the narcissism of virtue signalling their superficial worldliness while they bomb other countries for not submitting to the pride flag.

Natural traitors.

There is no wider point of view, there is no less tolerant a group than the liberal order.

You are right about one thing, liberals do hate the religious working class, which outs them as racist as all get out. In the south, some of the most religious folk are the black working class Democrats that praise God, but cannot see how the left is racist towards them. Even Racist in Chief, Biden still spouts racist garbage, but he learned from the most racist Senator, Robert Byrd, while both served in the Senate together.

They hate the religious working class because of Christian Nationalism. Rather than bashing liberals, why not bash the KKK or Birth of a Nation, which stole Christian symbolism and gave religious people a bad name?
I dislike all racists and idiotic religious people who think the planet is only 6000 years old.

They go in the same category of people who thinks CO2 contributes to the greenhouse effect on Earth.
The bible belt and the overabundance of the "my heritage" types, is my guess.
urbanites need to put others down to feel better about themselves. "the others" are too busy to play the same game. its easy to attack something that doesnt fight back.
