Why do US southerners have such a bad reputation?
I've been wondering about this. I'm Canadian, but I've been to the US more than once, and I've also had the pleasure of going to the Deep South. In my experience, most of the people I met in the US south are some of the kindest, most genuine, and most real people. White, Black, Hispanic, it doesn't matter either, it isn't a race thing either. All of them were very hospitable, and well spoken too. It's my second favourite place only after Maine (which is mainly because it reminds me of where I live in Canada).

I'd love to hear what the Americans here think about the southern US in general.

Study the Civil War and you'll understand.

I’m unaware of the bad reputations for us, I don’t notice it here, political disputes

They have the nicest most comfy hospitable people but at the same time the most crazed drunk conservative people.

The stereotype seems to be the opposite of what I described, mostly that a lot of them are racist and uneducated.

Well, "a lot of them" are. On the other hand, "a lot of them" are not.

They speak slower, so some assume they think slower as well.

Have a lot friends, and even one of my own brothers live in the south. He was transferred there working for the government. I think like anything else, its the leaders of those states crackpots, but i know many try to keep them out.

Other than that, as a NY Yank, my gaming habits would have folks think i'm from the south. American Truck Sim, Mudrunner, Arma, and a lot of games maybe more conservative folks may be into.

And of course my "Rangers" and American Flag, which covers my interest in military stuff, and, the NY Rangers hockey team.

But of course, people thing i'm from the south due to my gaming habits, and i get it from all directions.

In short, love my southern brethren, but on the other, a bit some backwood crackpots down there as well.

My husband has family down in the US, some in the northeast and some have migrated down to the southeast. Honestly, I'm always glad to visit either way. I generally have a positive opinion about the US and Americans in general. I've had mostly pleasant experiences and I think outside of the big cities people are just overall pretty welcoming and actually have time to talk. Life is just...slower there. Especially down south.

And I appreciate your insight.

to me as european they do not.

yeah they are know and dumb, uneducated gunhappy, inbreeding etc..
but they are also known as hearty welcoming trusting people.. who generously welcome stangers for dinner... and make you feel welcome..
they are crude.. but direct.
what you see is what you get.. and they expect you to behave in their land the same as them.

as opposide to notherners who basicly are the ones who are seen more inteligent and educated. perhaps not european grade educated it is america after all.. but also HYPERindividualistic and HYPERantichristian.. and HYPERcapitalkistic.. all the while plasnot nice people to be around
they will steal everything while smiling and wishing you a fantasic day while they hate your guts.. polished graves.. with fake tan, make up thicker than plaster and other superfusical stuff as their mask.. to hide how hollow they are inside..

most churches that are befriended with dutch ones are in the south... or in canada.. some in boston... as thats the traditonal region.. but thats on the decline..

ofcourse we know these are stereotye.. but we generally will trust a person from texas more than one from new york.

Everything is slower and rugged in the south. As a southern we make pretty good food and are hospitable, but the bad side of the reputation comes from addicts and drunks.

Any time you deal with the mainstream or social media, the narrative is always more important than the truth. You can see how many people who have stereotyped them without meeting them in these comments. The media's tactics work sadly.
