A ticking bomb inside the playstation
So according to many reports if the chip dies inside the playstation 4 your games will probably die as well even if you own them physically.Quote: When the battery dies, it trips a switch inside the console that requires the system to connect to the PlayStation Network and confirm the time. When this check happens appears to vary by platform. Ars Technica states that the PS3 checks in the first time you play a downloaded game, while the PS4 also connects to PSN when you play retail games purchased on disc. If these checks are not performed at least once after a CMOS battery replacement, the console will not run the affected content.
So let’s hope sony wont shut down the servers for the last gen store as well....(you have to be very optimistic)

Well physical is the best way(legally) but if sony doesn’t change a lot of people will take that path which is understandable in that case

The best way is to have no DRM at all, like GoG used to do at first (now I think they allow games with DRM too). It is legal (as far as I know using GoG does not make you a criminal) and you can keep as many backups of your games as you want which is more safe and reliable in my opinion than having a physical copy that you cannot duplicate because it does not work if you try.
Both physical and drm free is the best way.We still have no answer for steam games with drm but it’s probably saver to buy them on pc than digital games on playstation. But i buy physical on console anyway there is no point to go the lazy way.
Maybe the console fanboys will finally stop bragging about how great their console is when they need to buy all their exclusive Uncharted games a second time.

You got a point here but console and pc fanboys will always defend crappy practices so this won’t change

They just have to release a firmware update but if im looking at sony right now they aren’t the same anymore so they probably don’t care because it would be pro consumer
Welcome to the first iteration of digital bombs in history, pulled off by Sony.

Besides my initial comment to this post, I also want to say to jt, that if he ever needs work in the press, he will be welcome, I mean.. talk about a big header, but without any merits to it... but it sure lures in people
My thoughts exactly. He should at least mention that this rumor came from a hacker Lance McDonald. I had to find that info myself. But most people in this thread just don't seem to care, probably just gonna believe everything they read.
Is this really worse than the Xbox 360's 1 year shelf life with the red ring of death? I went through 2 360s both lasted a year before I gave all my ♥♥♥♥ away. I knew people that had gone through 5 xboxes in that generation.

Meanwhile my gen 1 PS3 (the best one with backwards compatibility) still works, and I've had that thing turned on for 3 to 6 months straight a couple times.

Also all my PS4 games are on an external hard drive, so if the PS4 did die, I can connect it to another PS4 or even a ps5 if I ever buy one.

It’s not a rumor it’s a fact.Spawn wave showcased it in a video as well on youtube and here is the link https://www.extremetech.com/gaming/321900-theres-a-ticking-time-bomb-inside-older-playstation-consoles

It does not matter if it is physical or not, physical format can be filled with DRM too as well, the only reason why in the past it wasn't is because back then the need of physical format was a DRM itself. For example producing cartridges was expensive and it was not that easy to get roms to write on blank cartridges for most people, so it was not enough convenient to mess with piracy on consoles like the SNes and Mega Drive.
The circumstances were different so people are not used to think about it but there is nothing more "pro consumer" in physical media compared to digital.
Both of them can be filled with DRM, or not.
For sure internet give many more opportunities for developers to put invasive and anti consumer DRM systems in their games, but at the same time it also give many more opportunities to consumers to find workarounds too, so in a sense internet brings out the worst in both sides.
Since I only like single player gaming you can imagine how much I hate online because of that, at least related to gaming.

It does matter i can literally install every game completely offline and play them. They aren’t patched but they work only online games need that.Drm on discs was always there but that’s not an issue
