Microsoft Windows 11 "RECALL"
Microsoft is planning total monitoring with an update called Recall, which will take screenshots of the current screen every 5 seconds. For this action 10% of the memory on each installed hard drive will be reserved. That would be awesome if we could get all gamers to switch to Linux. In any case, I'm getting fed up with Microsoft. I would be interested in your opinion on this.

u dont really believe that just because u tick off a box that its not 'on' right?
Dont be naieve:)

Something that requires specialized hardware and a quarter of a terabyte of space that runs completely locally isn't going to be able to "secretly" stay on in the background when you turn it off. You'd notice your computer's fan constantly sounding like a jet engine.

knowing microsoft, they'll tie it directly into the operating software as a requirement for use rather than as something optional on the side. you may have little choice but to accept that it will always be on, it's just some of the surface settings can be changed and that's it. That's the problem with closed source software, you don't know what they have programmed into it and how far it goes, and quite honestly microsoft will always want your data however they can get it.

Le Gasp!
You mean it can be turned off?

Amazing that all the youtubers going on about this don't mention that little detail.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's off by default due to the requirements. Overall, it should be off by default, not sure what MS is thinking here; people just want the Os to use, if they want other stuff they'll install it. Really out of touch move by MS.

It'll only make 3rd party tools more useful & popular, the ones that remove all the garbage from the OS and make some things unable to even communicate outside of looping back to the PC. ms seems to have a case of "chasing the shiny" rather than just making the OS strong without garbage included.

Firewalls are also going to be fairly important with stuff like that.

My opinion is that I'm trying to figure out what this has to do with the Steam platform.

Otherwise. Don't care. Windows is as Windows does.

Wow, I am definitely not giving my operating system 40 Half-Life 2's worth of space to pointlessly spy on me.

Dont worry, just by browsing the internet the government bodies (like the US ones) which spy on you 24/7 know a lot more about you then Microsoft ever will.....;)

its not as easy as just saying turn it off, normies are a big demographic that won't even know. Like my Mum won't even know she will just use the computer not knowing.

The only reason she will turn it off is because i would tell her too, she not going towindows 11 anway i already told her not to.

does your family use reward cards.... its very similar...

Yes they do and i told them its a tracking system, not my issue that they want to continue using that.

No source, it didn't happen.

The OS has always been a spyware, it's nothing new.

Fun fact: such a function HAS ALREADY EXISTED IN WINDOWS! Doing exactly that, saving a history of what you're doing for you later to recall, including cloud sync.

OPTIONAL cloud sync, as well as the whole thing being optional. But hey, I guess outrage is cheaper, than looking at history.

... or the present, there's a clipboard history, including cloud sync which is optional. Both cloud & history itself are optional, that is. TURN. IT. OFF. PROBLEM. SOLVED.

one of the things you also turn off when trying to optimize your windows or in general

windows 11 is so done, i don't what they are doing trying to be even more invasive and running our systems even hotter, but this just forces people to switch over to linux. God i miss windows 7

Recall needs specific hardware requirements to operate, including a Copilot+ PC with a 40 TOPs NPU, a Snapdragon X chip, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 Recall AI hardware requirements

I doubt most people will not meet the system requirements for Recall. It requires a specific chip for AI use.

Says the images are stored locally and are not shared. Plus it can be turned off.

/shrug

But I'm sure the anti Windows 11 people will blow this up into a more alarming story.

The fact that people have been claiming that they spy/steal your stuff since after Vista and not once has my life been affected by it makes me go "Whatever".

When the feature shows up I'll turn it off as I don't need it.

Any IT worker with more than a few months of experience could easily figure out if the PC is suddenly using 10% of its hard disk on 'nothing' and you wouldn't need much more to be able to extract data from the 'nothing'. Reflexively rolling out conspiracy theories to sound cool means that when real problems show up, people won't want to listen.

What's different at Microsoft now as opposed to during windows 10, 8 or 7?
