Volvo S80 2003
What do you say about this car? Is it a good idea to purchase? Costs around USD 15.000 (LKR 4.5Mn) I know we have crazy car prices here.

looks like a car the CEO would drive

no, we had one at the workshop, it had some timing belt and water pump problems, we couldn't do jacksheet cause specific tools were required and there it wasn't even enough room to put some wrenches in to check if they tighten everything up before returning the car to its owner, we basically had to remove the engine to do a check that required no more than 5 minutes and 3 wrenches.

So, if you have the money to maintain that whale, sure, if your workshop doesn't charge you too much for nonexistent problems, sure, if you are an average mechanic joe with sunday tools and whatnot, do not ever think about buying this ciabatta

I'm not a mechanic. But have a dedicated Volvo workshop in Colombo. My concern is spare parts availability
You say cars are high where you are. What does the cheapest running car you can get cost?

Is $15k a normal price for an old car? How does it compare to others?

Volkswagen Polo Sedan 2014, is way better option and can even be way cheaper.

Looks alright in terms of comfort and reliability for it's worth. Overall not a bad car.

Volvo is good, but only if you live in the right part of the world where mechanics and parts are readily available to work on it at a reasonable price.

Personally, I like the much older Volvos from the '70s, '80s ... they were built to last and easy to fix, just like the 1980's Mercedes, which are all still the main Taxis in parts of Africa and middle east, in nations like Morocco they are called "Grand Taxis" ... the last one I was in had over 16,000,000 'miles' on it, it runs about 1100 miles per day, almost every day of the year, for the past 45 years ... the owner said it only broke down on his wedding day.

In your part of the world, you should stick to Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, even some Nissan, and Mitsubishi. They are all built very well compared to anything else in the world right now. Parts are also readily available, and your mechanics specialize in fixing those brands... fuel economy is the best, they are safe, dependable, and they resell well.

Your volvo from 2003 might end up being a nightmare, but at best it's going to be an ok car with some quirks and it may be hard to sell and expensive to maintain.

If I lived in your nation I would buy a well used Toyota with 150,000 KM+ one that I can conform has had all its oil changes .... that toyota would be a very good deal, and hold its value. You can also put another 500k km on it quite easily if you maintain it.

you can find them, but from what I learned about that specific car and many others, it's just takes a month or year to have a different timing belt, a non compatible air filter, different engine attachment points, 2 kind of suspension rods and so on, certain cars are just maintenance nightmares on wheels
