People go to hairdressers for the convenience, or you can cut hair yourself or with help but it takes more time and effort generally when compared to professionals. It's similar to other services such as meals; you can cook or eat out.
My hair was long. I just cut it, now it is short. Took me like 5 mins, price: zero. It only takes time if you want fancy things.
Because it basically is? I grew up going to the barber, like everyone in my family/everyone that I knew.
I guess it's kind of like car maintenance - some people do it themselves and think it's crazy that people take their cars to the shop for all this "basic" stuff (spark plugs, brakes, etc). Everyone else just takes their car to someone who knows what they're doing, to have it done as a normal thing. /shrug
(that said, by the late 90's, I'd just given up on barbers and let my hair grow. Short period in the early 00's I needed to have short hair, then went back to letting it grow. But I recognize that it's "messy", and if I wanted a more 'professional'-looking job I'd need something neater. I certainly don't see short/barber-ed hair as "posh" or "luxury", it's just a regular, everyday average thing that regular folks do. Just not something I want to deal with.)
The hair thing that *I* really don't get is this whole big bulky Spartan beard thing that people have going on, especially when paired with short hair or bald head.
That's the thing about normality. It's like people assume that when everybody does it, then it is automatically logical.
I'm just not sure where you got the idea that it's "posh" or "luxury". Sure, if you go to Philip Pellusi for a $100 fancy job. . but just the generic red&white candycane sign barber shop? They've been the center of small town & urban neighborhood "guy & gossip" hangouts for decades+, a total blue-collar average-joe thing. (see: Ice Cube's "Barbershop" movies, etc). Or just generic cheap chains like Sportclips/Greatclips.
Because it's only to stylize it precisely. If you don't need that, can easily do it yourself.
I haven't paid for a haircut in decades, I always do it myself, it comes out better.
