Many people take absolutist stances against things for stupid reasons. Lots of the guitar music people hated synths. Lots of the synth people claim to hate guitars. A lot of people wouldn't be able to pick out which sounds in modern music were produced by what instruments. A bass guitar can sound the same as a synth. An electric six-string can sound like a wall of echoing noise. Etc.
I don't get why people say this. It's not as dominant as it once was, but of course rock (and other guitar-heavy music) is still "mainstream."
not as dominant, for sure. it was poor wording on my part, i admit.
Yeah, nothing personal. It's a meme people haven't been able to shake for... 15 years or so. "Shake it Off" by Taylor Swift is basically pop-rock (in the big scheme of things). Modern country might sell itself as an "alternative" to coastal music, but it's definitely big enough to be "mainstream."
