don't learn starting with sheet music. if i had done that i wouldnt have stuck with it. learning tabs is easier i could play songs on guitar starting from day one. then once youre ready you can move on to harder things.

Hey, Thanks for the advice. I'll give everything a try. Some people have different ways of learning. Some things like say, being able to read sheet music can be easier, or harder for certain individuals. Not everyones the same, nor learns the same way. Thank you for commenting.

this is probably bad advice but ive gotten to level 4 music in piano with an inability to read notes

i dont know how far you have gotten with guitar but ive learned a little but basically just know your coords and it will be easy
well i guess it depends how much you want to get into it. if you just want to play guitar for your friends at parties, tabs are fast and easy so thats what i did. but still, my goal is to be able to play canon rock eventually. probably wnt ever happen tho xD

If you work hard enough and practice, it's always within the realm of possibility that you could play Canon Rock. Wow, I should take my own advice - minus - that "Canon Rock" part. :P
Same with all things: Get a calender, and cross off every day you do at least two hours of good practice time with it. You're goal is to build up a chain of days practice without skipping even for one day.
Sorry to spam but I'm trying to get progress for pillar of community. Sorry for inconvenience.

2 hours will be hard. I get easily distracted, but its something I have to do.
Don't force yourself to practice. Practice because you want to, even if you really don't want to.

"Even If you really don't want to." Isn't that still forcing? Lol, I get what you're saying. Does every 1 of my replies get sent to everyone even when I quote? I'm sorta new to this, so I hope it doesn't annoy anyone. Thank You.

Hello,
Answer to Question 1. I do not have any real prior experience with any musical instrument.
Question 2. I have VERY LITTLE basic knowledge of music. On the guitar I know the strings "eBGDAE." I know the frets.

I am currently trying to learn and memorize where each note is on the fretboard. I practiced where the C,B, and D NOTES on each string are thanks to watching this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuzB2_O8GGM . He has a different type of Method.

Funny you mention Marty, I watch his videos a lot when I get curious on how to play my favorite songs.

(BTW i have an Ibanez RG series electric guitar, tried learning 2 years ago with it but stopped. Now I'm using an Ibanez Acoustic to learn.)

Nobody can play like Jimi, dude plays with his teeth!!!! Listening to his cover All Along The Watchtower made me wanna try again.

Forget about learning where each note is on the fretboard, it's a waste of time in the long run.

For right now, I would focus two things: learning the different major/minor chords and learning how to strum. Those two things are the first essential lessons I teach my students.

A simple chord progression you can learn right now:
G Major - D Major - E Minor - C Major

The first thing to learn is how to play each individual chord (you teach yourself by googling the tabs).
Once you've mastered that, strum each chord for 4 beats and then play the next chord until you complete the progression.

Tip: When strumming, it's helpful to count the beat out loud (One, two, three four, One, two, three, four). This helps you to stay on the beat.

Whew!!! Saves me some time then. Thanks a lot man. I'll google the Tabs as soon as I get the chance. Really does help.

Disagree. No pain no gain; the trick is to be consistent with practice, if all you can do is 30 minutes, an hour or two each day - do it every day you can. Don't make the mistake of "making up" for lost days by overdoing it.

You can have gain without pain !

Sure, he could probably learn by doing two minutes each day, but I also assume he wants to get good before he turns 90.

"Everything that you want to do is fun and everything you have to do is work."

Or something along those lines.

Besides, unless someone is in a hurry, nothing wrong with taking their time with things. And learning guitar doesn't take that long if some of the new random bands are anything to go by.
