it helped that i am so clumsy i kept falling off the thing even when it wasn't moving.
When I was a kid, my "skateboard" was exactly that... It was a wooden board with metal rollerskate wheels. That wasn't the fashion at the time, of course - I ain't that darn old. But, it was what I had.
To get to ride a good skateboard, I had to borrow my friend's. So, I'd borrow his at night or when he wasn't using it and that's when I learned how to really use one. Later, when he got a new one, he gave me his old one.
I eventually bought a better one of my own, but I didn't forget that one bit of kindness from another kid. Skateboards were... like "personal" things, back then, so loaning out a board was pretty unusual. A good friend was luckily not as rare for me. :)
Funny streak. Thanks for the laugh.
I have lots of skateboard stories. I had an Uncle Wiggly skateboard and I always kept the bearings screaming fast. I used to turn my skateboard backwards and lay down superman style and go down long steep hills. Stupid, yes, but sooo fun. You're holding on tightly (as to not produce a wobble) and your eyes would be watering and you would have a massive grin.
Longboards are unnatural.
If you want transportation, comfort, stability, speed, and momentum you should ride a longboard.
If you want a lightweight easily-transported deck to do fun impressive tricks you should ride a skateboard.
There is some overlap too, lots of longboards are as small/smaller than as skateboard and others are shaped like skateboards with the double kicktails.
You can put your back foot on the ground slowly and drag it, or you can carve side to side to slow down. Learning how to slide is the best way but takes a lot of practice.
