in the old days : paper ledgers.. where they wrote amounts behind accounts.
today : those ledgers excist as datafiles.. on harddrives.. but they are also backuped likely threefold.. that data even after a crash likely still is somewhere..
atm's and terminals at shops.. connect to the banks computer and verify that the code you type in for this card.. is the correct one.. than after that it alters the ledger for that shops account and yours bu the agreed amount.
at at atm the same thing happens.. only you get cash...
sometimes something goes wrong .. for example when an atm gave out money but did not decrease your account amount.. due part of the connection working.. ofcourse people who exploited this would later see their account amount dropped significantly..
banking in the olden days that I still remember.. was with a fysical bank book (paper ledger) you went to a bank.. and they wrote in that book the amount you deposited or withdraw..
a fysical person behind a desk did this..
there was a backup.. a big file cabinet.. and they had some sort of early computers that would print out files to put in that cabinet.. but the data storage was mostly local and annalog in my childhood.
when I did write a check in those days and send it by snailmail .. it took a few days to process..
some human had to recieve my letter check my ledger.. and remove the funds from my ledger and add them to another persons..
withdrawing money with a plastic card from an arm came much later..
and was at first also only possible at your own bank.. as the computer running that was still not networked.
with the disapearance of most fysical bank offices.. and many ledgers now digital.. and like 90% of all payments done with debetcards.. it would be a short term shock
but those fysical offices can be reopened.. those ledgers on those harddrives can be accesed and printed in annalog ledgers again and banking clerks can be rehired.. to return to how it used to be done..
it just would mean that a bank transfer would once again take 3 days (in same city) 7 days (in same nation) or 14-30 days (globally)
instead of being pretty much instant.
Absolutely not.
I hope this trend continues - https://theconversation.com/gen-z-goes-retro-why-the-younger-generation-is-ditching-smartphones-for-dumb-phones-204992
make sure there are internet jamemrs everywhere
have this town of a few 100 populated by some old timer volenteers..
make sure there is a library, a gas station selling maps, a "bank office" doing things the old way.. an phonebooth using phonecards.. + in a pub an old phone using coins.. both with rotory disk.. and more facilicies as such..
drop your modern teens in it..
you don't tell them anything not like you might use a map and those usually are sold in a gas station.. not that most pubs have a phone in them..
and see if they can figure out how to get out of that place back home...
flip phones with messager and other smart functions... oh silly gen z.. hand them a REAL nokia 3310.. to properly detox.. or better yet.. NO cellphone at all.. use a landline.
i dont want imagine future with AI when someone like you will ask in 2050 woulds todays teens be able to survive without AI and robot
**notice they are near a road in the woods.. and that there is a sign that means "end of urban zone" and from that figure they have to walk the other way to reach a town...
**ask around in that town to get that towns name.. but it's a name thats meaningless to them..
**figure out they will have to visit the bank office.. be able to list their account number (usually it's on your debetcard) as well as their national ID number (the number you registrated under in your pasport) + grab a withdrawel form.. fill it in. sign it.. and hand it at the desk clerk...
if they get that done they got cash.,.
with that cash they now can buy some food.. but must also get..
**request a library card to be allowed entry into the library..
**find the information about the town the are in.. so they get to know roughly where it is in the nation... and what towns with better transport they could reach..
**find the coinphone in the pub.. OR figure out to buy a phonecard for the phonebooth.
so they can make a phonecall..
-> however their parents will NOT answer the phone.. (hats to easy a solution)
instead they will have to discover at the petrolstation... on maps.. that there is a busstation a good 6 hour walk away...
-however that busstation will NOT be a bus that always drives.. but a bus that will only come if at least somebody in advance have called they want to use it..
-> if they missed that information... it will be again at the busstop sign.. but by than they have to walk 6 hours back to make that call..
so they will figure out make that call.. buy a map and a compass.. to walk to that busstop.. oh crap.. they could have bought a ticket for the bus at the local shop.. if they failed to do so they better brought enough cash...
that bus will bring them to a trainstation.. where they can take a train back home.
cause we're not barbaric.. we will have a truckdriver "come by" and give them a lift back to the town if they screw up to much..
there is a motel they can rend a room to sleep..
but again pay cash.. and need ID..
would modern teens make it out?
I very much yearn to return to an annalog world..
while i might say going full amish is pushing it too fark.. a "no internet" world.. I would likely prefer..
some computers and electronic apliances I apreciate..
and I think that the world of say the 80s.. before networking and internet became so dominant would mostly survive a solarflare...
sure it would cause some disturbance.. a few powernodes knocked out... a few university servers down.. but it would not be a deadly stroke..
today.. yeah to much of the old annalog world is already been torn down..
like annalog tv.. no longer in the air..
old annalog phones? nope.. there is no longer a signal over the line..
if you still want a landline phone you need a modem... and a voip phone..
the old ones with buttons or rotory disks that used the annalog phoneline that was powered independently.. and worked even with power out.. is no more..
You're welcome my friend
we had antibiotics and medicine just fine without internet and computers...
heck nazi build v2 rockets with bloody annalog computers.. that were essentially guided bombs...
you can do more annalog than you think..
